It’s Emily, who JJ hasn’t seen in nearly four years, who said goodbye to her not two miles from where they’re standing now. And JJ can’t get a breath in edgewise, because she looks so — so —
So like she did on their very first day of the Academy, all dark hair and bright eyes, ready with her smart mouth and soft gaze to pick JJ up and shake her like a snow globe, to change her completely and forever.
“Hey,” Emily says, smiling, that smile that has stayed in JJ’s heart, a pressed flower hidden in the pages of a book.
