perhaps a snippet from this chapter of cnimst 👀
I gotchu bestie.
This is still the scene where Adrien suddenly gets like that guy with the conspiracy theory board, when a kid in his class asks him about how a Cataclysm would work. I can't wait for you to read the entire thing! Hopefully I'll finish it soon.
For those who don't read cnimst, here's a bit of the context: Adult Adrien is now a science teacher at a high school and one of his students figures him out: Our boy Matt.
Matt really wants to prove to Adrien that he can be best boy and that he can be his sidekick. As such, he tries to use every single opportunity he finds to prove to Adrien he is trustworthy.
The following train wreck ensues one day in class:
---
“Because, what is a Cataclysm, actually? Is it just destruction? Bad luck? Well, some experts who have studied the heroes have realized Chat Noir’s power tends to bring malady to whatever it touches, right? But then you see that’s usually rust, or it vaporizes matter, or it turns it into ash. So basically, the Cataclysm has the power to accelerate natural processes like oxidization. Primarily oxidization, actually. But it also can...”
Matt tensed up as Mr. Dupain-Cheng went on his tangent .
What is he DOING? He thought to himself. He’s giving himself away! Does he not notice? Oh no, what if he’s like me and he really doesn’t notice when he rants! I have to stop him!
“But Raphael, there’s no point in that question. The Cataclysm is magic. You can’t explain magic with science.”
“Oh, you're right,” said Raphael, sinking in his chair. “I just thought...”
Adrien turned to Matt, mid-rant, perplexed and with his jaw slightly ajar. Matt winked at him and gave him a subtle thumbs-up.
Adrien looked confused. What is this kid DOING?
“Well, yes. But--there’s always a but in science-- let’s imagine, right?” Adrien winked at Raphael, prying a shy smile from the boy. “Let’s imagine we suddenly have Chat Noir in the room and he just cataclysmed, let’s say... an apple. And then he cataclysms a metal chair.”
Matt’s jaw dropped. He can’t be serious. THEY’RE GOING TO FIGURE HIM OUT.
“One time I saw him cataclysm a tree and it turned to ash but then another time on TV, he cataclysmed a billboard and it rusted,” said another kid in the class.
“Exactly, Tanya, exactly! So, my theory is that maybe the magic, what it does is that it accelerates decomposition processes. Which are not the same in organic and inorganic matter, as you all remember from our lessons in the eight unit, right? Then there’s also the matter--hehe-- of combustion. Sometimes the cataclysm causes things to explode and that can only happen, at least chemo-physically speaking, when--”
