Nash and Planet Barin
Nash is one of Velo's Champions, he's from the planet Barin and was engineered was engineered to always be on the move and never having to stop or sleep which causes him to be hyperactive and bad tempered, when defeated he'll beg for his key back, if playing as Team Bandicoot, Coco will hack his brain to put him to sleep for the first time, if playing as Team Cortex, N Gin takes interest in Nash's species and wants to recruit them as henchmen, which Cortex disagrees
Barin has an icy snowy planet that features ruins and mines with lava, and an underwater tunnel that shows the seafloor
Meteor Gorge is snowy and icy, there's also lava underneath the ground
Barin Ruins are stone ruins that have large worker robots that carry boxes back and forth, the entrance also has a Nash statue that fires a laser cannon
Deep Sea Driving is an underwater tube located in a cave, similar to N. Sanity Beach's Roo's Tubes, it also a giant sea monster underneath, this is also Nash's boss track where he uses Shark Teeth and Joke Teeth as weapons
Frozen Frenzy are icy ruins with fish statues surrounding the fortress and has saw blades guarding the four entrances
I never properly finished this because I ultimately decided to change the way I draw Geary, Norm, Krunk, and Velo later on, but I have had this picture in the works since... oh, I dunno, at least early march? maybe february? It’s not actually done, as indicated by the lack of shading on Geary (among other things), but I don’t think I will finish it. I didn’t want it to go to waste though, so here it is!
I made two versions as a play on Velo’s color-changing hair, so that’s why he seems to stay almost the same between both pictures.
!! I'd love to hear about your hcs for Barin! ^v^ (Nash is my favourite CNK chara henhe)
Alright, I got a few!
Starting this off, here’s this picture of Nash and Saber! ... and... someone else they know.
Barin is the furthest planet away from the center of Velo’s system. Its standard surface temperature is usually 0 degrees Fahrenheit, give or take. It has one moon, and is larger than earth by a notable margin. Thousands of years in the past, Barin was once a temperate planet, but it became a frigid wasteland thanks to a mysterious global cooling that rendered the surface uninhabitable for the longest time. This forced the ancient Barinichthys to go underground and underwater for warmth. Nowadays, the denizens of Barin have ways to counteract the freezing temperatures, so they’re slowly returning back to the surface.
Barin’s atmosphere has a significantly higher oxygen content than Earth and Velo’s World, which is something its inhabitants are well suited to. This is why Nash needs the apparatus, as well as the need to keep hydrated. The device has two chambers, one for air and one for water. The air chamber is connected to the ring his nose, the water chamber is connected to his goggles.
Technology on Barin is very reminiscent of steampunk technology, as many of their designs can appear rather flashy and decorative rather than functional. Barin Ruins, despite being abandoned and empty, still serves a purpose for Barinichthys, as the lava-like substance that flows directly under it serves as a power source for Barinean machinery and heats their underground homes. It’s certainly a way to turn something dangerous into something good...
Moving on to the Barinichthys themselves, they’re a very diverse species of alien. The only true shared traits they have are: 1. skeletons made of cartilaginous material, 2. even the slightest resemblance to an aquatic creature from earth, 3. lungs, rather than gills, and 4. A need to stay hydrated all the time, lest they dry up. The ‘ichthys’ part of their name could be considered a bit of a misnomer, as there are some variants that can resemble whales, dolphins, or even narwhals. It’s worth noting that the statues in Barin Ruins, with the exception of the (recently erected) Nash tribute, are not statues of other Barinichthys, but rather, separate species native to Barin.
Introducing Saber!
Saber is a swordfish-like creature from Barin. I’ve decided he and Nash’s species is referred to as “Barinichthys”. He has similar aspirations to Nash, wanting to be Barin’s new champion. He and Nash are friends, however, so he’d feel like he’d be doing Nash a disservice by (indirectly) kicking him out of Velo’s entourage.
As implied in the picture, Saber lost his dorsal fin (presumably in a fight he thought he could win), so he has a false one going down his spine. He could potentially take it off, but he doesn’t want to because he feels naked without it. On a similar note, Nash is also missing his dorsal fin, and alternates from a plethora of prosthetic fins. His favorite one is the prosthetic with three spikes.
The other species mentioned in this picture, the Slygs, are those eyeball slugs featured in Deep Sea Driving. They’re typically dormant, but can get hostile and destroy the technology the Barinichthys population worked so hard to build. So Saber, rather than using a machine or getting an army, has tasked himself with fighting them off! And he does have the energy and precision for it, so perhaps it’s a good fit for him...
