Knicks Coach D'Antoni Resigns
"Lin"sanity was not enough as New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni resigned Wednesday, after the Knicks lost their last 6 games, and 7 of 8. New York sits at 18-24 going into tonight's game against Portland. They are tied with Milwaukee for eighth in the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks began the lockout-shortened season with high hopes for Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudamire and Tyson Chandler on the team. New York couldn't get it going however, and struggled through the first six weeks of the season. The Knicks then became the center of the sports world, when they went on an 8-1 run in February led by point guard Jeremy Lin.
The move to release D'Anonti is a "mutual agreement" based on "conflicting views of the Knicks' future" according to Warren LaGarie, D'Antoni's agent. D'Antoni said in training camp that an NBA title wasn't out of the question for his team this season.
"If you have a center (Chandler) from the defending champions on your team that's 28 years old and is playing the best basketball he's ever played and you've got two superstars in (Anthony) and (Stoudemire), obviously you've got to compete for a championship," D'Antoni said on New York radio in December.
"It's my job to make (the players) fit and to get them to fit and to get them comfortable," he said after Wednesday morning practice "For whatever reason, we haven't been able to do that."
In 3 and a half seasons in Manhattan, D'Antoni was 121-167. In their only playoff appearance, New York was swept in four games by Boston. Mike Woodson is expected to coach tonight against Portland, and in the near future.
