back in the day
I will be the first to admit that I'm a Coachella snob. I was there the first year back in '99 and attended consistently up until a few years ago. For me it was always about the music- that and the idyllic desert setting.
here is a shoddy recap of what I can remember about the 8 Coachella's I've attended...
1999- first year of event. two days in October. scorching hot. Tool & Rage Against the Machine headlined. first time seeing/hearing A Perfect Circle. being disappointed with Dj Cam (he spun Jungle), and being totally mesmerized by Bassbin Twins performance. tix were $50 each day
2000- *no event held this year
2001- 1 day in April. less hot. don't remember much of the music. started my period on the drive down. not fun. tix $65
2002- 2 days in April. really good lineup. Bjork, Saul Williams, Jurassic 5, Prodigy, Oasis, Dilated Peoples, Dj Dan are the ones that still stand out. Pharcyde reunion that was cut short as they were late for their set. jam packed tent for that. tix $62.50
2003- 2 days in April. Beastie Boys, Ben Harper, Black Eyed Peas, RHCP, Jack Johnson, too many more. most vivid highlight is still watching Thievery Corporation perform at sunset and the crowd totally digging the sounds. tix $70
2004-2 days in May. Radiohead, Pixies, Kool Keith, Heiroglyphics, Mark Farina, the Cure, AIR, Crystal Method, Donald Glaude and I know that I saw more but can't remember. I do remember bad juju in our group...tix $77
2005-2 days in May. Buck 65, Weezer, Sage Francis, the Chemical Brothers, NIN, Black Star, the Prodigy, Roni Size, Kasabian. I had a celebrity sighting that rocked my world. Scott Speedman from "Felicity" fame. I took a picture of his back. tix $82
2006-2 days in April. Depeche Mode, Atmosphere, Eagles of Death Metal (whom i got autographs from), Daft Punk (I couldn't stop dancing), Tool (!), Massive Attack, Bloc Party (one of my top 10 performances), Minus the Bear, Madonna (holy frak, this was good. there wasn't a still body in the tent). tix $83.50
2007-3 days in April. 1 day too long (we camped though and were super cranky-pants by day 3). Bjork, Interpol, Dj Shadow, Peaches, El-P, Peeping Tom, Amy Winehouse, RHCP, !!!, Mike Relm, Rage Against the Machine, Ratatat, Teddybears, Lady Miss Kier (whom we met and took photos with), Cut Chemist. tix $84
I can't believe that I actually saw so many artists. Actually, I can't believe how many artists I missed because I wasn't listening to them then. I kept all the schedule booklets and was slack-jawed to find out who I had skipped over.
I attended the festival with 3 different boyfriends, my sister, and a bunch of people I'll probably never speak to again in my life. I got the worst sunburns, swollen feet/ankles, dirty, sweaty, achy, and blissed out.
If the opportunity presents itself, I would most definitely go again. all the elements have to be right though- no camping and a more-than-decent lineup. they're charging way too much for tickets now, and this snob is hard to please.
