India’s Winter Demand Surge Pushes Coal Fleet Back to High Utilisation
❄️ Coal leads the winter ramp as renewables keep pace
🔹India’s power system witnessed a sharp winter-driven rise in electricity demand in December, pushing coal-based generation back to high utilisation levels. Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows total generation increasing from 132.47 BU to 149.74 BU, with coal PLFs rising from 59.01% to 66.17%.
🔹Peak demand climbed by nearly 17 GW, yet the grid delivered almost zero shortages — highlighting stronger reserve margins and improved operational coordination. Even as hydro output tapered, system operators maintained reliability through tighter dispatch management.
🔹Interestingly, renewable generation also grew during the winter month, rising from 20.60 BU to 23.33 BU, supported by stronger solar performance and steady wind output. This suggests renewables are increasingly contributing incremental energy even during high-demand periods.
🔹As India moves deeper into winter, the balance between coal reliance, renewable integration, and cost pressures will shape short-term market outcomes and long-term planning.
