Hi Folks

Check out these awesome homes all made from Cob! When I look at these, I can only ask myself ‘why did people get lazy, stop using this method of building, and go for bricks and mortar instead’?

Aren’t these simply amazing? All kids dream of living in a sort of ‘fairie tale’ home one day, and you know, we never really lose that kid inside of us. What absolute fun it is to build a cob house too. One woman built hers alone, from scratch to finish, in just 4 months! I’m not being sexist, but it is pretty cool that a woman can build her own home using Cob!

Using only sand, clay, straw and water, you then jump or stamp on the mixture in sections at a time together on a waterproof mat. This gives a lovely muddy consistency. Now if you really want to get back to your childhood, you take your shoes off, and have a ball! If not, you wear a pair of Wellies. Eventually it mixes well together and then a kind of muddy soft ‘brick’ is hand made and packed onto the beginnings of the first wall, and on it goes.. The Cob bricks are quite thick. So using bits of cob for what we’d call ‘plastering’, is really only to cover any brick looking marks, as well as allowing you to ’round off’ and shape your home, the possibilities of what you can do to shape your home are endless.

It costs virtually nothing to build a cob house, which is why so many people are going back to this way of building, besides the fact, that they are beautiful, fire proof, warm in winter, cool in summer. It’s easy to install a fireplace, which again, you build by hand into the house as you are building it, and you can also build a ‘live’ roof if you want. This is the opposite of thatch. With a live roof, you’d grow strawberries, gooseberries and so on up there. So I guess people who don’t have much land would use this method to grow their own food. Always good to know this. And what a way to bring up kids as well as introduce Grandkids to! A real live little (or big) hobbit home (which is really cob, but hey, they are kids and need to dream BIG)

You can even build your own cob furniture! Get as creative as much as you like.

If you are planning on building a new house, think about building a Cob house. When I build my next home, it will definitely be Cob, as it’s so beautiful, cheap, warm and definitely my favourite! Besides, playing pixies and fairies when my Grandkids come along is something I cannot wait to do!
