Set in 6A. Cobra Queen (because I seem to love writing her) eRegal Believer and a bit Mayor Queen.
Henry doesn’t know what exactly he was thinking when he took her from his grandparent’s apartment and brought her home. Home to the big white mansion – their home, his and his mother’s. All Henry does know though, is that he couldn’t just leave her there, all alone. Trapped in her cage, trapped as a snake.
His feelings are complicated towards the other half of his mom – the Evil Queen. She is his mom, but at the same time she isn’t. There is a darkness, a cruelness within her that scares him – he doesn’t fear for himself is aware that she is no threat to him no matter what, but the rest of his family- they are a different case. Henry has seen the Queen threaten them knows how much she has already hurt them.
But he’s also seen the look in her eyes when she told him she was his mother too. Has seen what he is pretty sure was love – the same love he has always seen when his dark haired mother looked at him. And maybe she just needs someone to believe in her and he is the proud owner of the heart of the truest believer after all, right?
Believing in other people - believing in second chances, is what heroes do. And a hero is everything Henry wants to be.
He puts the cage on his bed and sits opposite to it watching his mother, noticing how restless she is, her eyes following every one of his moves.
“I’m sorry this happened to you.” He almost added “mom” but then stops himself in the last moment because this might have been too soon. This woman – well animal at the moment – confuses him and Henry isn’t sure what’s the right thing to do.
He just watches her for some time as she does him and once again he can see love and something resembling… hope in her dark eyes.
“Are you alright?” The snake nods her head but Henry doesn’t believe her for a moment. He has seen his mother telling him she is “ fine” far too often to not spot the lie. He knows now it always has been to protect him and he knows that the Queen – the evil dropped on purpose – does the same at this moment. But he won’t let her get away with it. Not anymore
“You are not fine, I can see that.” He hesitates for a moment but then tells her
“I’m going to open the cage but you have to promise to not do something stupid okay?”
Henry knows how much his mother hates being trapped, has picked up on that over the last years. Well, this, and the fact that the Queen has thrown herself often enough against the metal bars to injure her skin is pretty telling. It’s nothing serious but still concerning.
The snake nods again and Henry can almost feel her sigh in relive. Besides that snakes can’t actually sigh. At least he doesn’t think they can. He really should google that later.
Henry carefully opens the cage and for a moment his mother doesn’t move and then slowly, very slowly she leaves her prison.
The Queen hates being trapped. It reminds her of mother and vines, of Leopold and the forced bond of marriage. So she fought against the metal bars holding her in fought hard but failed.
And then he came – her little prince. He came and took her with him and for the first time today she felt safe. She is in his room now watching him and trying to ignore the hope she feels, tries to ignore her traitorous foolish heart.
But her son did take her home, he did let her out. Maybe he does love her. It’s stupid and mother would be so disappointed but the Queen doesn’t care. She has lost everything again.
Regina rejected her. Rumple betrayed her. Snow hates her. Robin is gone and so is her chance of revenge. The savior found a way to defeat her and she is so done with being abandoned, with being looked at like something worthless.
She doesn’t dare to come closer (god she will kill the person turning her into a snake if it’s the last thing she does) only watches and waits. Watches the one person who might still care about her.
Maybe. Probably not. But maybe.
“I don’t want you to hurt my family…-,” he pauses for a moment before he adds:” But I don’t want you getting hurt either. And I know everything is complicated and there might be things I don’t understand but if you truly are my mother too…please stop, please.”
The Queen is not sure how to react to her son’s pleading. She wants to give him the world but she also knows she can’t give up on her revenge. It’s eating her alive the anger powerful and raw- nowhere near as strong as Regina’s but its still racing through her and she can’t let Snow get away with it. She can’t let Regina get away with it. She can’t let go she doesn’t know how. She never did.
Henry seems to realize her conflict because he sighs and slowly lifts his hand and to the Queen’s big surprise he strokes over her head no fear in his eyes. Just frustration and strangely something that looks like understanding.
“Can you at least please think about it? For me?”
The Queen hesitates but he looks so hopeful at her, so hopeful and so confused and so she nods. She doesn’t know if she is being honest or not. Doesn’t know what she should do, doesn’t know if she can stop even if she wants to. She just knows she doesn’t want Henry to hate her.
She leans into his touch and he keeps stroking her head for a few seconds and it feels like heaven. And for the first time since the split the Queen feels somewhat grounded, not like the sky is crashing down on her.
“Thank you mom.”
“Mom” – he called her mom. The Queen doesn’t even know how to react, all she can feel is a warmth where her heart is supposed to be.
Maybe she will get her new beginning after all.
“I got some new comic books. Do you want to read them with me?”
The Queen nods her head so quickly that Henry has to smile and soon he is lying comfortable in his bed, his mom curled up against him. Reading the comic book with him. It is probably the strangest evening Henry ever had - and that’s saying something in his case – but he feels content, happy. And a bit like Harry Potter which is kind of cool.
Maybe everything is going to be okay.
Regina is tired – is has been a long day and she just wants to say goodnight to her little prince and then try to sleep. She knows sleep probably won’t come but it`s worth a try. So she slowly walks up the stairs but what she then sees almost makes her heart stop.
Her son is lying in his bed sleeping deeply, a comic book next to him as well as a huge snake. Said huge snake is curled up against him, watching him carefully.
Regina recognizes her immediately and even though her first instinct is to get her dark self away from Henry she freezes and just watches them for a few seconds.
But then their eye meet.. Hers and the Queen’s. And then they stare at each other, dark orbs meeting dark orbs and there is an almost pleading look in her other half’s eyes.
A look Regina knows all too well because she herself has worn it for such a long time. It’s the same she had before she and Henry found their way back to each other.
Because no matter what she or the Queen think, or do, or feel – one thing they will always have in common - Their love for their little prince. The boy who believed in them when no one else would. Who saw the good when they didn’t. Who made them feel something different than anger and hatred.
And Regina understands. So she only nods and tells her:
“Goodnight Your Majesty.”
She watches them for another moment, sees the gratitude in the Queen’s eyes, it disappears as fast as it appeared but it had been there. The snake nods and curls back next to their son and as Regina closes the door the snake closes her eyes.
Regina doesn’t sleep that night, too much is on her mind. Her Evil Queen problem just has become far more complicated than it already had been.
She hates her, right? Everybody hates the Queen
But her son seems to love her. Seems to miss her.
She seems to love her. Seems to miss her.
Not that she would ever admit that. But she does
Maybe. Probably not. But maybe
Sleep never comes. Neither for Regina nor the Queen.
Their little prince on the other hand sleeps peacefully because he has realized something his mother’s yet have too.
He loves them both. He accepts them both. He needs them both.
And Henry hopes that someday his mother’s will understand that too. And tonight was hopefully the first step in the right direction.
