Cobra Triangle (1989)
Cobra Triangle 1989 - NES
Today, I beat Cobra Triangle, admittedly, I had to save scum the final boss, I'll get to that later. But now I've knocked out the big three games featured in Nintendo Power #006.
This game is made by Rare, with music by David Wise. And their credits included a bunch of their dogs as "security"... cute.
The game is fun at first, a boat driving shooter game with an isometric view, and a power up system straight out of Gradius where you pick up special items, and press select to cash them in for that power up. With the most items will refill your health and give you temporary invincibility. Unlike Gradius though, you dont get stripped of your power ups if you die, or even if you get a game over, provided you still have a continue.
The game gets pretty frustrating fast though, especially if you're still learning the mechanics and how the power up system works. The worst missions involve jumping waterfalls against a current, and protecting some swimmers from fast moving kidnapper boats from all sides. Theres also these obstacle courses you have to sail against the current to reach the end of but it feels impossible not to sacrifice lives in.
And then there are the bosses... the rules change on all of them it feels like. The first one you just dodge it and shoot when you have an opening. Second one, you cheese it by going behind it where only its weak shots can reach. Third, just hammer the shoot button fast enough that you kill it before it kills you, fourth, just dont shoot it at all I guess? Its health ticks down but it wont attack unless you do, and it has a one hit kill homing shot... then theres the last boss...
Genuinely one of the worst designed bosses I've seen. It's a shark that swims around popping in and out of the water, only vulnerable in the mouth, if its facing you, and it has a one hit kill. Now, this boss is only hard because its timed, you get a minute and a half to take it down...and it loves wasting your time, taking its sweet time to pop out of the water, going out of it's way to face away from you when it finally does come out, and it's small finicky hitbox not always registering a hit, even if you have homing missiles... after an hour of attempting this boss, I just gave up and saved every time I hit him... if this boss wasnt timed, you could easily just shoot him from a distance, and idk about you, but an arbitrary timer not linked to like, a bomb or n impending asteroid only creates the wrong kind of tension.
I'm not gonna say I dislike this game, as I like a lot if games that get very hard. I just rarely commit to actually finishing those games like I have been doing lately. So I can see myself coming back to Cobra Triangle. But I dont see myself beating it again. This is more of a "how far can I get before game over this time?" type of game.

Cobra Triangle
This is one of the games that I was prepared to write off as lost to time, because I remembered playing it but couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the game. Googling it didn't help much because all I could think of was "game with boat", and that doesn't do much to narrow it down. But once I stumbled upon it purely by accident it was like a smack in the face! Especially the crab monster. I vividly remember the crab monster.
And I was pretty surprised by all the Youtube comments calling this harder than Dark Souls. I'm pretty sure I never beat this game, but I did make it up at least until the second sea snake monster, and that's pretty much right at the end. Maybe I just didn't reflect on the difficulty of the game?
I struggled a bit with the art for this one. I tried doing something digital but just ended up deleting my sketches several times, then my brain just made the connection boat + sea monsters = medieval sea map, and here we are. I am super pleased with how this turned out. Unfortunately my scanner kind of butchered it.
