CREATIV’ Spotlight: Zenith Roelle
What are the plans for your music in the future? What are you workin on?
To experiment. I think when you experiment you make something really special. Something you connect to. You become stubborn in a way, because what they say does not really matter. It doesn't. Experimenting to me has a close connection to creating. You create at the most unexpected time… that's why I thrive to be uncomfortable, insecure, depressed, happy.. I want to feel. I firmly believe that for some the only reason they want to become a musician is for the glory, but then there are people who have a real...very real connection with music. As of right now, I've been writing a lot. Writing a lot of songs, and learning. Learning from other people who share the same connection with me.
What influences how you make music? What sort of artist do you consider yourself?
FKA twigs is one of my biggest influence when it comes to making music. Her style, her sound, the way she moves.. Everything! I look at her and see this fearless woman. This woman who challenges the norm and refuses to step down. Arca, Sevdaliza, The Weeknd, Banks.. So many! Haha. It’s this sound that you can see. I can see it. And when I see music that is how I know I felt it. I believe I’m an honest artist...I like to talk about true things that happened..things that I would usually hide.
What got you involved in music in the first place?
I think it was me constantly going to war with my mind, and the only escape I had was creating. It kinda saved me. I mean.. I was a dark skin girl with a crooked nose who spent most of her teenage years at the hospital or a therapist's couch. My mental illness took over me. Seriously. But then I look back and go, “Wow, I am blessed.” Blessed because I strictly believe that when you are in a fatal battle with your mind, your imagination becomes extraordinary. People who are battling their worst demons create the best magic. So I felt blessed. Blessed that I could see the world differently, and even though it wasn't good all the time I had a story.
How do you feel about the internet as a platform for new and undiscovered talent?
I think it's such an amazing tool. I’m not really a big fan when it comes to social media ,but when it comes to music being discovered has actually become way easier than before. You can collab with anybody without meeting them face to face!
What new music and/or artist do you like?
I just discovered Lorn and I am in love! I am really liking this modern r&B chill type vibe. With a dark bass, fat 808s, and lots of atmospheric pads. Tell us about your music. Angry. Happy. Depressed. Real. I say real a lot, because I feel like it's important to have a connection with what you are making. To be honest. To not fake it all the time. I mean, what's the point? Of faking? Why?
