welL. where am i supposed to start?

With the first game. Halo: Combat Evolved. Preferably Anniversary just bc it's prettier, and terminals are hella, but I don't know if that's available for computer (there's no difference between the two games aside from updated graphics and the addition of terminals that give you background information about...things). It's a really really really fun game. The mechanics are gr8 and the story is told very skillfully. The atmosphere is incredible. Even the parts that are skincrawlingly creepy are engaging and exciting rather than just scary. You remember the Collector ship level in ME2? There's a level structured very similarly to that in CE, and imo its creepiness holds up much better under repeat playings than its descendant's does.

Failing that, read "The Flood" by William C. Dietz. It's essentially a novelization of the first game, with the added bonus of getting to see more than just Chief's perspective.

Just get the story of CE one way or another, be it through playing the game, reading the book, or watching a playthrough online.

Then read The Fall Of Reach. Not only is it a phenomenal book, it tells the story of the creation of the SPARTAN-II program and the start of the war. In fact, the book ends where CE begins.

I don't want to get too detailed, so I'll stop there.
