Wet boy got caught in the downpour yesterday. 🧖♂️🚿
My Wheaten Marans boy is very nice. 💕
Hello my name is Boots! I am a 2 day old Barnevelder chick. Mom had to help me out of my shell as I was incredibly sticky, parts of my membrane dried out and stuck to me, and I pipped at the wrong end. And I was noticibly smaller (despite being fully developed) than my other clutchmates. I also bruised my nose pretty good trying to get out. The odds we're stacked against me. My mom had to give me 3 baths to get me un-sticky enough that my wings weren't sticking to me so I could balance. I also had to get some boots fashioned out of blue taped because my toes curled in from being badly positioned in my egg. Hence the name I was given. 😆
But I am loud and proud and never gave up! Today I got my boots off, and was finally able to join everyone else in the brooder! Today is a happy day! Tomorrow mom is washing my hair after she gets home from work. What? Does she not like my current hair style?? I'm quite taken with it. I think I'll throw a fit the whole time. Then maybe she'll notice how impressive my hair is! It's so unique compared to the others!
Anyways, mom's gotta leave. Something about making money? Whatever that is. 🙄
The other day I went to pick up this boy, PicklePi, for some lovin and notice that his right side and lower chest had ballooned. Like literally ballooned. It felt like air. And it was making some crackling noises. Alarmed, I immediately brought him in the house to be put in ISO. I did a quick needle aspirate to be sure there was no liquid, and it was all just air, like I initially guessed. Some quick googling and it sounded like he had subcutaneous emphysema. Which is basically where one of the air sacs through a chicken's body tears and releases are underneath the skin. at least that's what I got from my quick Google searches. He's been acting normal overall, no sneezing or weezing or decreased energy, so I probably wouldn't have noticed that there was anything wrong until it was too late if I hadn't had picked him up. We have no idea how he did this. our guess is that since he's the lowest man on the totem pole he probably got trampled by the other chickens cuz they all like to sleep in one spot. We've now blocked off that spot.
So anyways, I got some 18 gauge needles and I poked him with the plunger of the syringe out to release the air. It was the least invasive thing that I could think of without trying to get a scalpel or a pair of sharp scissors and making a small incision. Today's day two and he's doing so much better. His right side doesn't even feel like it has any air at all like it was. It didn't get his chest yesterday because I was a little leery poking him with a big needle in his chest but I had to do it today. All went well. He is such a good boy. He let me poke him in the side yesterday with no complaint whatsoever and only a little bit of complaint with the poking him in the chest this morning. But overall he did so good I'm so proud of this little bird.
I also trimmed his feathery crest and beard a bit so he could see better. Dude was literally falling asleep as I did it. 😂
Why yes, I do have a chair in my chicken pen! Why?
Because the Queen needs a roost to gaze upon her subjects from.
He's so cute. Make sure you have the sound on, he makes his little "look here's good food!" Noise and I love it.
Took this just before I wiped down the walls of the ISO cage. Notice they were getting gross. Lol
*Turn your sound up!*
Omg, I've finally caught PicklePi, the smooth black silkie, crowing!!! ITS TOO CUTE I MIGHT DIE!
