Your hank is legit amazing! Where do you draw inspiration from?

First off, I want to thank you for the compliment very much, and apologize for the lateness of my reply - it’s been a bit of a week, as evidenced by my lack of activity the last two days.

But in answer to your question?

Absolutely key to my Hank is Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, which ran from 2001 to around 2005. See, coming out of the 90s, writers hadn’t had any real idea what to do with Hank for years - if you go back and read X-Men from the mid to late 90s, he basically served as the cast’s doctor and scientific genius, and not much else. So, when Grant Morrison was brought on to bring the X-Men into the 21st century, one of the things that kicked it all off was Hank’s mutation from ape to cat in X-Treme X-Men.

That transformation, and Hank’s very complex and complicated feelings about it, inform basically every word I write about him. I think that it makes him an incredibly interesting character, with clear symptoms of body dysphoria, and Morrison stated in an interview that, “He's obviously quite clearly bipolar and swings between manic excitement and ghastly self-doubt. He has no dark secrets, however, and nothing to hide."

Looking at the ebbs and flows of Hank’s moods, how he regards himself, the utter lows that he can sink to, this made . . . ridiculous amounts of sense to me. Couple this with the traumatic events that he undergoes in New X-Men, especially #117, and it all combines to create this very uniquely brittle yet unbreakable psyche.

He’s clever enough to know he’s bipolar, but he’s too worried about how it might make people see him to really be open about it. He’s caring enough to constantly watch out for people and monitor their emotional well being, but private enough that it requires painstaking effort to get him to talk about his own actual feelings. He’s incredibly dedicated to being in control and acting as human as he can, but he’s too beast now to ignore some of the urges and feelings he has.

Hank is just this ball of contracting elements, all of these forces operating to keep him stable and functioning, and he’s a very deeply unhappy person despite the fact that he’s consistently one of the more funny heroes out there. Humor is the ultimate distraction, and I can think of multiple times in RP where Hank has played something off as a joke so well that it can derail any attempt to find out if he’s actually as okay as he says he is.

Other inspirations have included:

Astonishing X-Men, most especially Joss Whedon and Warren Ellis’ runs on the book, which gave him the perfect counterpart in Abigail Brand and developed his bipolar tendencies, his relative emotional fragility, his animalistic urges and his traumatic fears of devolution.

Kieron Gillen’s S.W.O.R.D miniseries, which influences his sense of humor, his type of intelligence, his dependence on others and his need for stability.

And there’s a healthy sprinkling of classic comics in there as well, most especially X-Factor Volume 1, his time on the Avengers in the 70s and 80s, and, of course, some of the 90s Chris Claremont run.

That’s just the comic stuff, of course - I draw a lot of inspiration from various films, video games, books, etc, but in terms of the core of Hank McCoy, this is what I draw from. :3 Hopefully that answered your question!

56. How did you learn about roleplaying? How did you get started roleplaying yourself?

As for how I got started, I guess my little brother and I just never stopped ‘playing pretend’. We love making up stories and characters together, and spend hours pouring over shows and movies, discussing the tropes and themes they contain and trying to replicate it with our own ideas. Occasionally, we do it by text message or email, but usually we just talk and act it out.

Because of how much I enjoyed portraying a character, I took acting classes when I was 10, which really was just a different form of roleplaying for me. Apparently I wasn’t too bad, because I was moved from the 10-12 year old classes to the 13-16 and was being encouraged to get into the business, but the wheelchair and medications made it too difficult. Getting out of bed on chemo drugs and pretending I was okay was all the acting I was up to at the time. I kept singing, though, and take private lessons once a week. I focus on opera and musical theater because it’s a great opportunity to get into a character. When it’s in another language and I have to tell the story with my expressions, motions, and quality of voice, it is so exhilarating. I’m thinking that maybe if/when I get into remission, I’ll start acting again and see where it goes.

Anyway, I realized we weren’t the only ones who liked roleplaying when I joined Neopets. I sent in all the forms so I could go on the forums at age 11, and that’s where I started ‘officially’ roleplaying. It was a nice substitute for acting when my body just wasn’t able to. Unfortunately, people assumed I was lying about my age to be on the forums and the bullying got to be too much, so I took a few years off, tested the waters again on Gaia, did a bit of LARPing, and then ended up here a few months ago.

57. What was your first roleplay character? 

My first PNP OC that I remember was Romia, who I still use over at my multimuse blog, and my first canon character was Emma Frost, who I just recently started RPing at the SHIELD Institute group, along with Sharon Smith (Catseye, who I’m more than willing to make an indie for if there’s any interest :) ).

I don’t get a lot of things in my ask box, so I tend to get a bit carried away. Sorry for the essay of an answer!
