Bad coconut wine kills eight in Philippines

Another 300 people have been taken to hospital after drinking the same batch of lambanog.

At least eight people in the Philippines have died - and 300 more taken to hospital - after drinking a local liquor made from coconut sap.

The victims came from different towns but had bought the liquor - known as lambanog - from the same shop, say local media reports.

They complained of stomach pains and dizziness before being treated.

Bootleg versions of lambanog, which has an alcohol content of around 40%, are common.

Police say most of the victims hailed from Rizal town in Laguna province, southeast of the capital Manila. Others came from the nearby Quezon province.

Ok, so... on the day this was taken, this was my first time EVER drinking this thing. I blame and thank my more adult extended family members for encouraging me to be a man about it and YOLO.

It’s called Lambanog, which is distilled Coconut wine. I drank half a glass of this (see glasses in front for reference. I forgot which glass I drank from) and trust me, this sweet thing burns. Like how good quality sake is deliciously, deceptively sweet and goes down good, it doesn’t kick you until sometime later.

The little things you see at the bottom are raisins, which make the wine sweeter and a lot more pleasing for some to drink enough to get wasted pretty fast.

And no. I did not go beyond one glass. It did wonders to my sinus and throat phlegm that day though. I’m a responsible drinker.
