#Repost @onlyone @download.ins --- Marine scientist and activist Randall Arauz is known for his devotion to ocean conservation in Costa Rica. Randall first went to Cocos Island in 2004 to figure out how to best track marine animals. He’s since been back 48 times. During his many years researching marine turtles, Randall began to notice a troubling trend. The massive schools of hammerheads around Cocos Island were not nearly as frequent, and the numbers were noticeably dwindling. The reason for the alarming decline of sharks in Costa Rican waters is overfishing and exploitation. “I would come to port and see all these shark fins—30 tons of shark fins—and I didn’t know how to wrap my head around the issue,” @randall_arauz says. Shark finning is the practice of catching sharks, removing their fins, and discarding the dead or dying shark back into the ocean. The atrocious practice continues today, and recent changes in Costa Rican legislation all but condone it. Earlier this year, Costa Rican President @carlosalvq signed a decree that declared sharks as commercial species instead of wildlife, even those at critical risk of extinction, leaving them open to overfishing with virtually no protection. On July 4th, Randall led a peaceful march in San Jose, Costa Rica urging the Government to restore critical protections for endangered sharks in Costa Rican waters. Hundreds of Costa Ricans took to the streets and joined him, including legislators like Jose Maria Villalta, who commented on the importance of sharks for marine ecosystems and economic activities like artisanal fishing.
