Faking it
Code Kunst as your fake boyfriend
Prompt from @prompts-of-the-pond Somewhere in your apartment, you hear your phone ring. You pick it up as soon as you find it, “Hey mom! What’s up?”
“Y/n, how have you been? You haven’t called me in a while…” your mom replied.
You sighed, thinking your mom can be a little over-dramatic at times. “It’s been only 2 weeks, mom. I was busy with moving apartments, settling in, and exploring my new neighborhood.”
Your mom then questioned you with the move, if you hired movers, if you had friends help you, if it's near your work etc. But you know she's only stalling until she asks you the million-dollar question.
"Are you back on the dating scene yet? My friend is visiting her son in Seoul for a month, and she's arriving next week. We'll be meeting up and I can set you up with her son!" your mother exclaimed excitedly.
Bingo! The most dreaded question has sprung up and to be honest, you didn't want to be bothered by it anymore so you lied and told her yes, you've been seeing someone and that is also why you haven't called her in the past two weeks.
A barrage of questions then came from your mom, "How is he? Have you gone on a lot of dates together? What does he look like? What's his job?"
"He's tall, buff, protective…" you started throwing random adjectives to describe your non-existent boyfriend.
"Well, then. I'd like to meet him when I’m in the city next week when I meet up with my friend. But don't forget about my friend's son in case this one doesn't work out," she said, and at last, the phone call ended. You know she only means well but you just don't want to be pressured into dating at the moment.
You were already in bed when it suddenly dawned on you that your mom wants to meet your non-existent boyfriend next week. You panic a little because you're not sure if any of your friends would agree to be your fake boyfriend.
You realize that you’ve been hanging out with Sungwoo a lot recently, and although you don’t really see each other as being more than friends, it’ll do. You just now have to convince him to be your fake boyfriend.
The next morning, you send Sungwoo a text asking where he'll be that afternoon. This proposal needs to be done upfront and not over the phone, so you can maximize the use of aegyo and puppy dog eyes if need be. He was prompt to reply that he'll be at the studio all day and you tell him that you'll see him later.
After work, you stopped at a nearby restaurant to get dinner and decided to get some steak, pasta, and a bottle of wine, hoping that the expensive food will work in your favor in asking him to be your fake boyfriend.
You get to his personal studio and you ring the buzzer. You hope he's in there alone because you forgot to ask if he's working with anyone and also because the food you bought is only good for two people.
He lets you in and it seems like he's alone. You breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why do I have a feeling you have a favor to ask?" Sungwoo said with scrutinizing eyes.
"What makes you think that I do?" you replied nonchalantly and you set the food down on the coffee table.
"Expensive food, wine…to what do I owe the pleasure? The most you've treated me to is street food," he teased.
"I am offended! Fine. I'm gonna cut to the chase," you plop on the sofa and take a deep breath, "can you be my boyfriend for a night? Fake boyfriend!!" you added the last bit for clarity.
Sungwoo laughed his signature falsetto laugh. You're in disbelief. Is he laughing because he thinks it's funny or because there is no way he's doing you that favor?
He catches his breath, then proceeds to open the wine and pours himself a glass. He takes a sip and asks, "What sort of trouble are you in that you need me, ME, as your fake boyfriend?"
"I kind of told my mom I'm dating someone to get her off my back, and to stop her attempt to set me up with her friend's son," you admitted.
He then asks you why you chose him because surely you have other male friends that you can pass up as your boyfriend and you tell him that it's because some of them are in relationships and the others you just aren't close with to ask this kind of favor. Then you tell him how you saw your pictures from playing football and hanging out with friends and how some of them could pass as 'date' pictures.
"You're right to bring this wine. I needed the alcohol to process all of this," Sungwoo said and would laugh occasionally at the absurdity of your favor.
"So?" you asked. You were ready to plead, give him puppy dog eyes, maybe even kneel.
Instead of answering you, he started opening the food and splitting them in half, one for each of you, and he started to eat. You let him because he looks like he's contemplating on it, but you don't touch your food out of nervousness.
You continue to look at him expectantly, throwing in some puppy dog eyes.
"I can't eat with you staring at me like that. Will you stop and eat if I say yes?" he asks and you nod. "Alright, but it's just one night, okay?"
"Yes!" you exclaimed and you finally started eating. You ask him if you can meet him throughout the week so you can take 'date' pictures so you have something to show your mom, and you're kinda shocked he agreed. That wine is doing its magic.
The two of you agreed that he should pick you up and that the two of you should arrive at the restaurant together.
On the way to the restaurant, Sungwoo asks, “By the way, how did you describe me to your mom?”
“Uhhh, I told her you were tall, buff, protective, etc. You know…just positive things…” you said with a shrug.
“I’m tall, I can fake the protective part, but the buff part? Did you really have to tell your mom your ‘boyfriend’ goes to the gym every week? I don’t exactly look the part, you know…” he exclaimed.
“Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t have your exact description in mind when I was making up a guy so she’d stop asking me invasive questions. Now, at least try to act like you like me later until we can both leave, okay?” you retorted.
Upon arrival at the restaurant, you told the server you have a reservation, and you were shown to your table. Your parents were already there and your mom was beaming seeing you with a ‘boyfriend’ and your dad was stone-faced, probably already judging Sungwoo behind his glasses.
The dinner went surprisingly well and you were a bit shocked that they took his being a musician in stride. They laughed at Sungwoo’s jokes and were somehow charmed by his falsetto laugh. You thought you could leave after dessert but your dad decided to talk to Sungwoo alone despite your protests. It was sure to be embarrassing but Sungwoo assured you it’ll be fine.
You were left alone with your mom and to solidify the lie, you showed her pics of the two of you together, even pics of Seeroo and Panda. You assured your mom that the cats don’t trigger your allergies and you might’ve swiped a bit too fast past a topless Sungwoo carrying Panda to prove to your mom he was muscle-y underneath his baggy clothing. You also played some of his music and your mom thought they were catchy.
Sungwoo and your dad eventually came back and the two of you thanked your parents for the meal and eventually bid goodbye.
“That wasn’t so bad. I think I was passable as your boyfriend,” Sungwoo remarked in the car on your way home.
“What did my dad tell you?”
“Just to take care of you, and keep you happy.”
“Oh thank god.” You were relieved. “At least it was nothing embarrassing.”
“We’re adults. I think that was implied. What were you showing your mom?”
“Your cats, and your abs, to justify the buff part,” you said with a giggle.
“You did fucking not!” he said, eyes going wide.
“She insisted!! Well, anyway, thanks for agreeing to this. I owe you a big one,” you thanked him sincerely.
“If you need a fake boyfriend, just let me know. Steak and wine are required to process the request,” he added in jest.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
