i've always felt it's because it's something we have total control over that's still visible to others, like, "Look I Have *Changed*! Perceive!!!" it's also pretty accessible to change on one's own - home tattoos or piercings, say, are...not for the faint-hearted but anyone can do a cut or box dye in a moment of overwhelm. (i gave myself...a lot of questionable home cuts in college lmao.)

tbh that does sound like a good explanation! i also find it interesting that it seems to be women/women aligned people who do it the most (at least from what ive seen), probably because a woman’s hair is her crowning glory? how women have to be damn near meticulous with their hair so it’s a sense of rebellion? the ancient delilah instinct? who knows.
