the evil uncle thing was a plot point added to the ella enchanted movie. it was as unnecessary and ridiculous as it sounds but the part was played by cary elwes, so, silver linings
Yeah, I remembered a second after I reblogged that.
Gods, I hate that movie so much. It was kid!Marzi’s first taste of betrayal. The book was- still is -one of my favorites and I was so excited for like a year leading up to the movie’s release. I couldn’t wait to see the story come to life.
And it was Like That.
(Other book highlights the movie altered include:
- Char and his father not being white
- Char and Ella falling in love over years of consistent, realistic communication grounded in friendship
- Olive being slightly more sympathetic, as she’s implied to have some kind of developmental disability
- Ella having a gift and passion for languages
- Mandy being that rarest of female protagonists: an apparently middle-aged woman who isn’t physically attractive and never gets a love interest
- When was the last time you read about a fairy woman with frizzy graying hair and a double chin who works as a cook?
- Generally compelling and complex characters in a fascinating, believable setting
- Ella’s mother’s necklace being this absolutely gorgeous-sounding combination of silver and pearls, not a tacky heart locket
- ELLA’S MOTHER ACTUALLY HAVING A CHARACTER AND NOT JUST SHOWING UP FOR FIVE SECONDS TO BE THE REQUISITE DEAD MOM
- Interesting cultural differences between the species in Kyrria, and even between the Kyrrians and Ayorthaians
- Seriously guys it’s a relatively short children’s fantasy book and the characters are more developed than in some adult novels)
(In conclusion, if you’ve only seen the movie, you’re missing out)
