Hope Gangloff (b. 1974), Coffee Klatch, 2016. acrylic on canvas, 30 × 48 inches
The Coffee Klatch is always great! I especially like the discussion on our right to free speech. Captain Chaos and the DOGE-Bags are experts at gaslighting!

“You mean that thing called seasons that Hawaii seems to have forgotten about?” he teased gently as he made himself at home on the kitchen counter, hands clasped between his knees. “Yeah, that was nice. The snuggling part. The fall part. I mean, all of that was very nice,” he added, lifting a hand to indicate the package she described.
Danny licked his lips, gaze going thoughtfully distant. “I think it’s only fair that since you said something nice about Jersey, I can find something nice to say about Hawaii. I mean, you are certainly a very large part of that, but as we’ve established we’re picking things outside of said person in our lives…” he continued, trailing off.
“The spirit of family. I didn’t appreciate it when I first got here because I didn’t want to be here, I made that very clear to everyone around me, and they were understandably put off by my attitude but…I’ve gained a family here. I did before I got to the island, lucky as I was to meet you. You were my introduction to it and - Five-0 gave me grounding here, you gave me grounding here. Family is the people who want you around, regardless of being blood or not, the ones you protect with all your being, who are at your back no matter what. I find that Hawaii feels more like home these days than Jersey.” He ducked his head, grinning slightly. “And if you tell anyone I said that, I will deny it to my last breath.”
A raised brow slanted across the tile floor at his very vague slight of her home state followed by a shake of her head and a smile. “Of course, six months outta da year, Jersey don’ got bikini weathah. So ya loss really.”
He had her though, as he talked about ohana, and how he was finding himself in tune with it, especially after finding and building a new one here on the island. She knew exactly how hard it was to be an implant, malihini to a strange and exotic land. This place spawned her and she’d felt like an alien first in New York and then in Jersey, and maybe Danny and Jay were the only things that kept her feeling even remotely sane. But they’d managed. And now he was strengthening new roots. She could get behind that. Well, until he grinned and said that. “I wan’ ya ta stop for a sec, Danny. I wan’ ya ta consider I’m very armed.” A hand drifted to her hip where her gun rested next to her badge. Second, as well-trained officer of da peace I will have ya on da ground an’ cuffed ‘fore ya can blink.”
Whether she was enticing him to try her, or simply teasing was hard to tell as she sipped the poured coffee, waiting for him to drop the other shoe and say something completely offending. She had to admit though, that grin of his was adorable, bordered on shy which was not a word she normally associated with Danny, and maybe his words had been a little on the sweet side, his closet-romantic sticking it’s toe out into day light.
