Here is my response to the ‘Coffee and Hexagons’ theme for my first motion graphics assessment. The audio comes from this video, titled “Coffee Machine Music.”
The animation of the large hexagon is supposed to be reminiscent to that of a beating heart, while the pattern of small hexagons in the background represent air from the lungs or blood flow.
I made a precomp from a small hexagon, that is supposed to be synced with a modified version of the sound file with the ‘clicks’ removed, via the program, Audacity. Two sets of repeaters were applied to the single, small hexagon to produce the ‘tiled’ appearance; one for the rows and one for the columns. I would then rotate the precomp of the small hexagon pattern by 120 degrees, and enlarge it to have it fit the screen. This allows the background of the small, hexagons appear more dynamic and distinguishable.
I used the ‘Convert Audio to Keyframes’ feature to translate the sound to the scale of the hexagons, with some adjustments for the animation of the large hexagon, during the clicks, to give it more ‘oomph.’ Similar adjustments were made to the smaller hexagons to ensure that their movement isn’t too subtle.
Personally, I feel that the animation of the hexagons are a bit too similar to each other, even though they have different sources. Unintentionally, the animation of the background hexagons and the way they’re tilted sometimes gives the illusion of 3D parallax, which adds a nice touch of depth to the visuals.
