This fic started as a scene and turned into 13k words of Shane Hollander trying to say one sentence in a bathtub. The working title was “Shane uses his words (badly)” and that’s still the most accurate summary I’ve got. Second fic in this fandom, potential series. I wrote two men watching Tom and Jerry before having incredibly emotional sex and I’ve never been more proud of anything. I am having a time.

Summary: Shane has a question he’s rehearsed six times and can’t get through once. Ilya has yes-or-no questions and a sponge and all the time in the world.

This is the second fic in the Ya Tvoy series and it started because I needed to know what happened when Ilya decided to be educational about being in charge. The answer is: Shane (more or less) learns a few Russian words, has a very bad time, has a very good time, and says two words at the end that I will not be recovering from personally.

insomnia. found this gem in my inbox:

“Too many words, I give up.”

this was left on chapter 9 of my novel-length fanfiction.

I want to walk you through the ao3 experience, just so we’re all on the same page.

when you search by tag, ao3 shows you the word count. right there. in the browsing results. before you click anything.

when you click on the story, ao3 shows you the word count again. on the main page. listed clearly under the title.

when you open a chapter, ao3 shows you the word count again. at the top of the chapter. in plain text.

this person saw the word count a minimum of three times, opened the story anyway, read through to chapter 9 — which, for the mathematically curious, is not chapter 1 — and then left a comment to let me know that there were, in their view, too many words.

in a novel.

that they had navigated to deliberately.

using a website that told them repeatedly how many words were in it.

I genuinely do not know what was expected here. a novel-length fic that is also somehow very short? a different kind of novel? fewer words, arranged more sparsely, in a larger font perhaps?

the premise is good though, apparently. so that’s nice. I’ll be over here, using words, at novel-length, as advertised, as signposted, as clearly indicated by a website that tried its absolute level best to prepare you for this moment.

Frankenstein endures because it names a specific kind of evil: the powerful creator who demands credit for innovation and disclaims responsibility for harm.

Victor Frankenstein would feel perfectly at home among today’s tech titans who build systems of unprecedented reach and then plead neutrality when those systems distort truth, exploit labour, radicalise users, or corrode democratic norms.

Like Victor, they frame themselves as visionaries beset by unintended consequences, as though scale absolves authorship and profit excuses neglect.

Shelley exposes this cowardice with brutal clarity: the monster is not the thing released into the world without choice, but the one who refuses to govern, guide, or restrain what he has made.

When today’s tech leaders insist that AI harms are merely emergent, inevitable, or someone else’s problem, they are replaying Frankenstein’s oldest lie, that creation without care is not culpability.

The novel’s power lies in this indictment: innovation without responsibility is not tragic, not complex, but morally bankrupt, and history remembers its architects not as geniuses, but as men who built gods and then wept when asked to act like adults.
