Happy Wednesday. Went down the Wikipedia rabbit hole that is “human stampedes” yesterday. What bizarre tragedies. Makes you a little more grateful to be alive.

Coffee sound effects + beat + bass guitar + vocals = Coffee Song.

These were the first of many food-related lyrics throughout GoBoy 5. The focus on junk food lyrics in this and a few upcoming songs actually led to me eating far more junk food than usual for a solid year. Taco Bell, McDonalds, Ben & Jerry’s, Doritos, etc. I only stopped after developing a couple health issues related to diet. Those health issues cleared up after a few months of better dieting.

Regarding the sound effects, as explained in post 82, I worked as a sound designer for the film industry once upon a time. While there, I learned the utterly useless skill of creating / manipulating sound effects. That skill was utilized in “Coffee Song,” along with songs like “Magic Unicorn” and “Mermaids.”

The goal for “Coffee Song” was to reimagine “Summer Breakdown” (song 5), and more specifically, reuse the chorus melody and chord structure (“Coffee Song” has the same chord structure as the chorus in “Summer Breakdown”). After about four days of trying to get the “Summer Breakdown” chorus melody to work in this song, I gave up and turned the “doo doo” falsetto part into the chorus. I could have completely altered the beat to fit the old chorus, but by that point I had added the coffee sound effects and didn’t want to mess with their magnificence. Seriously, I love the combination of the beat and coffee sound effects.

The original version had raunchier lyrics. Six months after it’s original release, I released a new version with clean lyrics. This particular song didn’t benefit from being more explicit.

Beat + bass + melody. That’s the style of GoBoy 5 (album). While I’ve appreciated this minimalistic style for years, “Tell My Mama” (song 42) was the first time trying it. I went whole-hog with GoBoy 5, in which most songs primarily consist of a beat, bass and melody (this paragraph is an excerpt from post 80).

A bass boost was added to songs 37-99 in Nov, 2021, while I had covid (this paragraph is an excerpt from post 38). As a result, this song feels more powerful. The bass boost isn’t a simple plugin nonchalantly added to each song. It’s a process that took about 3.5 hours per song, or one whole month to complete all songs. Admittedly, I pushed the bass boost a little too far for some of them. The bass in some songs sounds like a freaking earthquake (unnecessarily pronounced low frequencies 20 - 50 Hz). Might dial that back someday. The bass boost was also applied to every song on GoBoy 6 and beyond.
