“In very rare cases, events and states such as transcendental meditation, ego annihilation, substance abuse and even mental illness can result in an attunement with what has thus far been named a 'cognitive neural network' (Barnes et al, 327). This network is comprised of nodes, each of which is a conscious mind. These conscious minds may be linked by physical relation, for example proximity, line of sight and being engaged in conversation with one. However, what makes this cognitive neural network technically classified as fringe is the other relation classification, that being the abstract class. Connections may be formed among nodes by thinking about said node. This connection is far more subtle, and creates an acute synchronization among involved nodes, such that each node will subconsciously gravitate towards the thought pattern of others. This abstract synchronicity has been observed in Fullman's twin studies in 2003, the relevant draw being that synchronicity has been observed among both related and unrelated subjects (Fullman et al 443).
The future of a field such as this is nearly impossible to predict, as we have not even begun critical research into the nature of these cognitive neural networks, and have only observed that they exist, nothing more. However, speculators state that if we nurture these connections, we may truly open the human mind to a higher level of metaphysical understanding through distributed thought experiments, and even communicate instantaneously with synchronized individuals. However, we cannot allow our desire for science fiction to obscure the reality of the situation. Subjects attuned to the cognitive neural network thus far have experienced events that cause a distinct rejection or distrust of the physical world, and thus far many would argue their participation in these networks has not enriched their lives sufficiently to outweigh the damage one must undergo to ascent to higher order understanding.”
