When it comes to the batfam discovering that Tim Drake is missing his spleen, it is typically portrayed either as an injury or illness becoming very problematic due to his lack of a significant part of the immune system, or some kind of argument about Tim feeling that the batfam doesn’t care about him in the same way he cares for them. While both of these are entertaining, I find the more mundane conversational bombshell approach: someone is missing their appendix, another has had their tonsils out, someone still has all their organs, and… what do you mean you don’t have a spleen??
Appendix: Bill Mantlo
If you're a comic book fan, I truly hope you know the name Bill Mantlo. For one thing, he was the "Fill-in King". When Marvel started becoming notorious for late issues, they started a fill-in policy to address this and if you needed a quick and creative story to keep a deadline, Bill Mantlo was the guy to turn to. If it was a licensed property, no one wanted to touch it, just ask Larry Hama on how he got G.I. Joe. However, Bill Mantlo was out there pumping out Rom: Space Knight and the Micronauts (winner of 1979 Eagle Award for Favorite New Comic Title) as well as taking his turn on Tarzan, Human Fly, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, Man from Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, Questprobe, Buckaroo Banzai, The Last Starfighter, Sectaurs, Red Sonja, and Savage Sword of Conan. If you're a fan of Rocket Raccoon or Cloak & Dagger or Swords of the Swashbucklers, he co-created them. Reference to Bruce Banner's troubled and abused childhood, that started with Mantlo. As well as fill-ins, he had runs on many titles including The Incredible Hulk, Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man, and Iron Man. At the same time, he studied, earned his law license and was out there fighting for real people in real life as a Legal Aid Society public defender in the Bronx. All that changed when Bill was the victim of a hit-and-run accident while roller blading on July 17, 1992. The injuries were so severe that when he came out of the coma, he has had to have full time care at a health facility ever since. In 2014, Bill was awarded the Bill Finger award.
Re: medical question -how are you feeling after the surgery? Any sensations? I heard that when getting the appendix removed you also get stitches - do they feel weird in any way?
I got a laparoscopic appendectomy, which means there’s three small holes rather than one large incision. I can’t really feel individual stitches, but it does hurt a lot. I left the hospital an hour or two after surgery, and slept for three hours when I got home. But the next 12 ish hours after were agony! I couldn’t inhale without feeling like my insides were being ripped apart, and if I forgot to breathe for a second the pain was as bad as before I went to the hospital. In the couple days after surgery the pain is in more specific areas (I assume that’s where the incisions are, since to me it’s just under the bandages)
As far as feeling weird, my whole belly feels tight like when your bladder is full, but other than that, it just stings and aches
I hope that answers your question!
Also feels worth noting that I have a condition that means I have chronic pain and pain meds are less effective for me
Appendix has a purpose
Season 3, Episode XIX Finale Appendices 🔎 | Lark's Final Journal Entry #MidstSpoilers
do you take requests? If you do, could you write a semi-long Peter Parker appendicitis fic? I think you already have a few, but I really love Peter Parker appendicitis fics.
I too, love a good Irondad appendicitis fic! I've written two of them! I think I would happily write another if a good idea, that was different enough from my other two, popped into my head. But for now, I'm not sure what that would look like...
In the meantime, here are links to my two as, well as a few of my favorite appendicitis trope fics!
