This past week at school a lot of things happened to me both physically and emotionally. Physically, we had a pretty intensive week filled with a multitude of presentations and final exams, which my cohort likes to call Celebrations of Learning. Even more intense, we were blessed with the opportunity to participate in the well-renowned cadaver lab that Bastyr offers their students. If anyone knows me well enough, they know I was bursting with excitement. It’s not every day that you get to see what real human organs look like from the inside out. There was so much growth that happened to me that day and I don’t even think I’m able to fully comprehend what’s happened inside me yet. But, the appreciation I have for that person who chose to offer their body to students like me … it’s indescribable. :://:: Along with these highs there have also been some lows. I’m turning the corner in my midwifery education. We are halfway done, officially, and the past two quarters have rocked me. I feel unbalanced and as far away from grounded as one could be. I miss my kids and I miss my husband. I would be lying if I said I didn’t have days where I wish I had my old life back. The comfortable one back in our home in Olympia, working a 9-5 job that required very little of me, and having all the other hours of my day to spend quality time with my family. They say this is the hardest part of the program - winter quarter of second year. ———- My saving grace this week was being with my wonderful cohort mates. We are all in this world of the unknown, feeling frustrated and not fully grounded. Many of us are just putting our heads down and chugging along because otherwise we know we won’t survive. But to have this opportunity to see them, to connect, and know I’m not alone makes me so incredibly grateful for this sisterhood that’s been formed. They’ve pulled me out of this puddle I’ve been drowning in, just long enough so that I could be reminded why I chose this path in the first place.
