How I Improved My Well-being by Exercising Less
How I Improved My Well-being by Exercising Less
You might be doing more harm than good to yourself with your exercise regime. Image by imagerymajestic
What is your go-to coping mechanism when you are feeling overwhelmed?
Dessert? Potato Chips? Wine? Shopping? Netflix marathons?
My “drug” of choice used to be exercise. I get that this may seem like a perfectly healthy response to feeling overwhelmed, but my intention behind exercising was

Ok, my boyfriend (is he even still my boyfriend? idk) had been struggling with drugs for a while, I went away on various trips for a month and a half and while I was away he got even worse (which is saying something) then he went travelling himself, and got in even deeper. He's now trying to quit by going cold turkey, but he won't tell many of the people he's close with or his family or seek professional help. The other day he had fit or something and I didn't know what was happening and it really terrified me, he said its just one of the symptoms of withdrawal. I don't know how to help him because he won't tell me anything, and I know this sounds awful and self-centred, but I can't look after him because I have my own problems that I need to sort though.
He fluctuates between saying he can't be around me and that he's sorry and that he doesn't want to drag me into this, and saying that I keep him grounded and it was when I went away that he went off the rails and he needs me here to support him. When he is high he can sometimes be aggressive (not physically) and deliberately hurtful, bringing up my own issues with self-harm and blaming his habit on my difficulty committing, but when he comes down he is always horrified at himself and says he never meant it and it wasn't him talking. I am beginning to find this exhausting, but I do want to help him get better, as my friend if not as someone I'm with in a relationship.
I was wondering if anyone in the wider tumblr community had any advice on how to help people through things like this, or any experience they wouldn't mind sharing as it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks
