Coldplay → Violet Hill January 28th, 2013 - April 12th, 2015
Voila!
After what seems like forever, this oil painting is done! Technically it’s my first oil painting... I think? I started Chris in January of 2013, after I got my first set of oil paints for Christmas and I didn’t realize how long oil paints took to dry..I had left him to dry for a full day, then came home to work on him again but the paint hadn’t dried. So I kinda messed that part of the painting up, trying to finish details without letting the first coat dry which is why Chris looks a little hammered. Anyway, it took a few months to dry (Chris turned from a light purple like Will, to the pink he is now) and I just kind of lost interest in the piece. I moved into a new place recently, and while unpacking I found this unfinished project and my oil paints, and was inspired to complete it. I got the idea from Coldplay’s music video for Violet Hill. I thought it would be cool to try different shades of purple/violet for each of them. Oil paints are very textured, so it was difficult to find the right lighting when I took pictures, which is why I gave multiple angles. I think Jonny’s eyes have to be my favorite part of this piece.
Coldplay → A Rush Of Blood To The Head Era August 26th, 2014 The third installment to my "A Splash Of Colour Series" ! I finished it late at night, after working on it all day. Took me forever, and I couldn't post it for the 12th Anniversary of A Rush Of Blood To The Head, but I'm proud of the fact I did some art again. It has been a really long time since I last did a project like this, but I finally had a day off from work, and finished the weekly quota of schoolwork... I didn't have much to do but lie around the house. So I grabbed all my drawing utensils, sat down and got to work. I know I messed up on Guy, (really badly) but oh well, I can't scrap it. Like the previous works of the series, I chose a photo from the selected era (AROBTTH I hope, I wasn't sure about the photo) and sketched it in pencil. No mechanical was used for this one though, nothing was too detailed. The album cover itself didn't have much color, so I kind of had to improvise with the "splash" part. I thought the Live 2003 had a neat design to it, and it was still in that era, so I decided to pop that in there for the background with a tan colored pencil. Gave a cool effect I think. In other news, once I was done with this drawing, I felt excited to draw again. Sitting down and forcing myself is what I needed, I'm feeling inspired to do more soon. :)
Chris Martin → Yellow
September 17th, 2013
It's been a while since I sat down and did some real painting, sketching, etc. I hadn't bothered to start a project or even mess with other ones in a while, but I still have kept up with doodling. Anyway, after hanging out with a good friend of mine one night, I was walking home and thought "I want to draw. Tonight I will draw. No matter what." So I got home, watched a bit of a movie that was on (because the TV literally just sucks you in) and after about 10 PM I managed to pry myself from the screen. I was dead tired, it was late, but I forced myself to scroll through old photos that I had saved for the reason of wanting to draw them later on. I'm not too sure why I'm always drawn to this music video/song when it comes to doing projects, but I picked my favorite screenshot towards the end of the video and concluded watercolor would depict the enhanced shades of the sky best. I've never really done a project with watercolor, so this was like 90% experimentation and figuring it out as I went along. The very last part to be done was Chris's face, and boy was I nervous about doing his eyes. Because it doesn't matter how beautifully the rest of the painting turned out; if the eyes were cock-eyed or weird it would be ruined. I literally stayed up all the way until 5 AM to finish this "masterpiece" , and that's pretty odd for me because my normal sleeping habits include going to bed early, and waking up at 5 AM. At several points throughout the night/early morning I was literally nodding off on my laptop, but I pulled through with some Coldplay music. A little sloppy looking all together, but I like that quality in this painting. I'm proud of this one, and most in love with the bright colors, especially in Chris's eyes and lips (I've noticed while drawing, he always has the rosiest lips.) So I guess I'll just chalk this up to another one of my 'Yellow Inspired' projects...
Chibi Will Champion → Mylo Xyloto Era July 31st, 2013 Happy Birthday Will ! I know it's been a while since I've worked on this project, or even anything for that matter, but I bought a new laptop recently because my other one finally decided to die (I dropped it, oops).. So with this nice, new, fast computer I decided to mess around with my Bamboo tablet again. It just happened to be a coincidence Will's 35th was just around the corner, but here we are... Voila! The last installment to the Chibi Band Project before it's all pieced together as one. I think I waited until last minute to do Will because I was a bit apprehensive about doing the drum set. It's just so many little bits and pieces that you want to get just right, but it's so difficult to get it perfect. As you can see it's a bit of a rubbish knock-off version I drew here of Will's actual Mylo Xyloto drum kit anyway, but I think I did a good job on the graffiti part at least! So, once again - Happy Birthday to Will Champion, the best drummer on earth and the biggest, most lovable teddy bear there is :)
Coldplay → Viva La Vida Era
February 17th, 2013 - March 2nd, 2013 The next set of drawings in my "A Splash of Colour" series! :) This one was in my head f o r e v e r. As soon as I finished the X&Y Era sketch, I had this idea, but I could never figure out how to group them together on a piece of paper. I had a couple different variations, but they all seemed sloppy compared to this one. This was the only way Guy, Will, Jon, Chris and 'Viva La Vida' would all fit on one piece of paper properly. Just like the last one, I have the album name in color, and all of the boys in black and white. I think this was a great photo shoot to draw because of how they're all grouped together with the red marks on their faces, bringing in the 'splash of colour' ;) Luckily, I just bought the Viva La Vida 2009 Tourbook off of Ebay and the pictures I needed were in there! Originally I was going to use the pictures off of the internet, but the ones in the book were SO much better. Details beyond my drawing capability. Like you could see the pores in their faces and what not. I tried to go as detailed as possible, which meant I had to use a mechanical pencil for Jon, Guy & Will. (Sorry for the pesky glare, graphite does that I guess) I included close ups to be able to view my hard work :D hehe. Chris's picture if you notice in the actual photograph must've been taken inside as opposed to the other boys, because his background is black, and he's much darker shaded. The focus of the camera was also really only on his eye with the finger and paint so it worked out well; I could shade as dark as I needed to with the soft sketch pencil, and it didn't have to be crazy detailed, because that's like impossible with that pencil. So *phew*.. The red war face paint and 'Viva La Vida' was done in a red and red orange colored pencil. I made sure I rushed and finished in time for Chris's 36th birthday too, btw Happy Birthday Chris! :)
