Tuning in in Tulsa

We’re in Tulsa, a city with a rich musical history, and tonight Coldplay are performing just a few blocks away from the legendary Cain’s Ballroom - the birthplace of Western Swing.

Cain’s Ballroom started life as a garage in 1924, but quickly went from servicing automobiles to being a renowned musical hub within the state of Oklahoma. Purchased by Madison W. “Daddy” Cain in 1930, it was transformed into Cain’s Dance Academy and hosted regular dance lessons and evening gatherings to entertain the crowds with jazz, rag, blues and country music. 

Bob Wills - known universally as the King of Western Swing - was a regular performer at the Academy; he and his band, the Texas Playboy’s, broadcast their regular radio show from the stage at Cain’s, and played regularly at the venue, drawing crowds from miles around.

As the music scene moved on, Cain’s saw new performers taking to it’s stage, stepping away from the Western Swing it was known for. In 1978 the Sex Pistols rocked the building, and it now continues to be key in bringing live music to Tulsa, hosting to a range of artists across musical genres - Tegan and Sara, Coldwar Kids and Catfish and the Bottlemen will all take to it’s stage later this year!

As we get ready for doors to open for tonight’s show, it’s inspiring to think of the music that has come before us in this city. Being the birthplace of Western Swing and now about to host Coldplay (one of the biggest British bands in the world right now!) can only mean that tonight’s show will be one to remember, with a one of the most diverse and engaged music-loving audiences we’ve played for so far!
