My hands shook as I looked down at the positive pregnancy test. My mind was racing as the panic set in. Cole and I have been dating for almost two years. We met a few months before he started working for my brother and sister, James and Sophie.
"Y/N?"
"In the bathroom," I called out to him.
"You ready to go to lunch, babe?"
I stood up and grabbed the test. I walked out of the bathroom, ready to tell Cole about the baby.
"Hey, before we go, I think we need to talk. . ."
My breath got stuck in my throat when I saw him talking to James and Sophie. All three were smiling at me. I tried to hide the pregnancy test, but James saw it.
"What's that?" He asked.
"Nothing," I stuttered.
"Holy shit," Sophie said, slightly laughing.
"Y/N?" Cole said my name softly. "Is that what I think it is?"
"I umm. . . It's. . . Well. . ."
As I stuttered, Cole walked over to me and took the pregnancy test out of my hand.
"It's positive," he said softly. While he looked up at me, my brother lost it.
"What?!" James yelled. "You're pregnant? What the hell were you thinking? How could you be so careless, Y/N?"
"Will you relax?" Sophie sighed, trying to get my brother to calm down. "So she got pregnant. It's not that big of a deal, James. At least we know
the father is her long-time boyfriend."
"I don't care," James scoffed. "It was careless and stupid to get pregnant. I bet they weren't even trying. They probably got drunk and forgot to use protection."
"How is this any of your concern?" Sophie asked.
"She's my baby sister. Of course it's my concern! It's yours' too."
"This has nothing to do with us, James," she sighed. "This is between Y/N and Cole."
The entire time they argued, Cole stood in front of me, staring down at the positive sign on the pregnancy test. Finally, he spoke up.
"Is this real?" He asked under his breath, still not looking up at me.
"It is," I whispered.
"Wow," Cole chuckled. "That's. . ."
"You son of a bitch!"
We looked over to see James getting ready to charge angrily towards us. Cole instantly grabbed me and gently pulled me behind him. Before he could get too close, Sophie grabbed him.
"Will you calm the hell down?" She snapped at him. "In fact, why don't you and I leave them alone?"
"No way," he cut her off.
"So that they can talk about what they want to do," she finished with her famous deadly glare.
"I'm not leaving," he said. Sophie laughed as James left. He came back with a beer and sat on the couch.
I glanced over at Cole and he sent me a gentle smile. He reached over and grabbed my hand as his other hand was still holding my pregnancy test. He squeezed my hand reassuringly as Sophie left too. I looked over when she came back with two beers in her hands.
"Here," she said, handing it to Cole. "Figured you could use one. None for you though, preggers."
"Please don't call her that," James groaned.
I took a shaky breath as I pulled my hand out of Cole's grasp. I walked over and sat in a chair on the other side of the coffee table from the couch where James was sitting.
I picked the invisible lint from my jeans as James glared at me. Sophie sighed as she sat next to him. I looked up and saw Cole hesitate to sit next to my brother. I struggled to hold in the tears when James glared at my boyfriend and Cole scooted away from my brother.
I sat across from the three of them as they drank their beers. James continually sent glares towards Cole, and Sophie kept glancing up at me with an excited smirk.
"Okay," James said, breaking the silence. I jumped when he roughly put his empty beer bottle on the coffee table. "We need to talk about what we're going to do."
"We?" I said under my breath. "It's not your baby."
"Y/N, you are way too young to be having a baby," James sighed.
"I'm 24," I stuttered.
"Exactly," he laughed like I had just proven his point. "You're only 24, Y/N. You're still in college, you keep changing jobs, and you can't figure out what to do with your life. You really think you can raise a baby?"
My eyes filled with tears as he laughed. "James," Sophie scolded. "How can you say that? So she's young and, yes, maybe a little too young to have a baby but. . ."
"You honestly think Y/N can handle having a baby?" James shot back. "She can barely take care of herself. I mean, for crying out loud, Sophie. She has her own apartment but you stay with her every weekend!"
"Well. . ." Sophie stuttered.
I glanced up and saw Cole already watching me. His eyes softened when he saw the tears I was holding back. He opened his mouth to say something, but I shook my head.
I looked at my hands, playing with my fingers as my brother planned what to do with my baby. Sophie tried to remind him he shouldn't get involved, but he somehow convinced her to join his side. Whenever Cole tried to defend me, James threatened to punch him.
"I want to keep the baby," I blurted out.
"What?" My brother and sister yelled as they jumped up. They started shouting their opinions at me, but I was focused on Cole's reaction. He was still frozen.
"Enough!" I yelled. I slowly stood up and finally tore my eyes away from Cole. "This is not your decision to make. If I want to keep this baby, I'm going to. The only person who gets a say in this is Cole. But even he can't decide if I keep the baby or not. He can decide if he wants to be involved or not but. . ."
I let my sentence drop as I looked at Cole. He smiled as he stood up and walked around the coffee table. He reached over and grabbed my hands.
"I want to be involved," he whispered.
"Really?" I stuttered, my eyes filling with tears. Cole leaned down and pressed his lips down to mine. I smiled into the kiss as he let go of my hands and wrapped his arms around my waist.
Cole broke the kiss and leaned his forehead against mine, rubbing his nose on mine. He took a deep breath before slowly leaning back. He smiled down at me as he reached up and grabbed my chin.
"I want to be involved," he repeated.
"You can't be. . ."
"Stop!" Cole yelled, cutting my brother off. He stepped away from me, instantly standing between me and my brother. "If Y/N wants to keep the baby, then that is what we are going to do. And if you have anything to say about it, keep it to yourself because I don't give a damn. She is going to be an amazing mother and I am going to stand by her every step of the way."
I grabbed his hand and turned him around. I pulled him towards me and pressed my lips to his. I felt him smile into the kiss as he wrapped his arms around my waist. We ignored my brother groaning and my sister giggling excitedly as they left the room. I broke the kiss and wrapped my arms around his neck.
"I love you," I whispered.
"I love you too, Y/N," he whispered back. "And I meant what I said earlier. I will be by your side your entire pregnancy and throughout the baby's life. In fact. . ."
He smirked as he leaned back and grabbed my hands in his. He led us over to the couch, pulling me down next to him. He intertwined our fingers as he slowly looked down at me.
"I think we should move in together," he said gently. "That way I can help you get the baby's room ready, I can help baby-proof the apartment, and can run to the store at 2 am to get you whatever crazy food you're craving that day."
"You're really okay with this?" I asked softly, my voice breaking.
"Yes," he said simply. "I love you and I can't wait to raise a baby with you."
