I based this on a Coles Phillips Life magazine cover and actress Elizabeth Montgomery. I'm not super clear on how I came up with that combination but here it is. It's entirely possible I've been in quarantine too long. Maybe I've gone batty. Clarence Coles Phillips (October 3, 1880 – June 13, 1927) was an American artist and illustrator who signed his early works C. Coles Phillips, but after 1911 worked under the abbreviated name, Coles Phillips. Known for his stylish images of women and a signature use of negative space in the paintings he created for advertisements and the covers of popular magazines. His work is really outstanding. Elizabeth Montgomery (April 15, 1933 – May 18, 1995) was an American film, stage, and television actress whose career spanned five decades. She is best remembered for her leading role as Samantha Stephens on the television series Bewitched. Bewitched was the primary reason I became an artist. Specifically a commercial artist. When I was a precocious kid I latched onto the idea from watching Darrin and Samantha solve their preternatural problems through art and advertising. I then set about having a career in commercial art and advertising. Coles Phillips for LIFE magazine shows a woman seated on the floor next to a table whose surface is covered with gifts. Above gifts from various gentlemen callers are displayed: a photograph, horn with bell, a box, a purse, a fan and the book "Of the imitation of Christ." The blue in the woman's dress matches the blue of the background, creating a sense of negative space, typical of Phillips' "Fade-away girl."
