An Abundance Of Katherines Spoiler Review
An Abundance Of Katherines by John Green is the story of a child prodigy named Colin Singleton, who only dates girls named Katherine. There have been 19 Katherines, to be exact. Right after he graduates, Colin is dumped by Katherine 19, so he and his friend Hassan pack up and go on a road trip. Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl. Him and Hassan end up in Gutshot Tennessee where their summer is tipped upside down.
When I first started An Abundance Of Katherines by John Green I wasn't sure what to expect, since I didn't read the synopsis of the book first. I was pleasantly surprised with the road trip book John Green had published. Colin is a very interesting character to read about because of how smart he is, so it's interesting to enter the mind of someone who thinks differently then the average person. The characters were all extremely well written and developed, making the story a quick and fun read. An easy 4 stars.
When I started reading Katherines, the concept of Colin only dating Katherines was intriguing. However, as soon as Lindsey Lee Wells came into the picture, I knew Colin would end up with her in the end, which he did.
Colin was a very complicated character. Some things he said I did not understand or had to read over several times before I understood. That however did not prevent me from enjoying and respecting him. Sometimes Colin did get very annoying but Hassan was there to call Dingleberries and snap him out of it. To see how people with a mind like him think was amazing. Watching him develop a formula that told him exactly how his old relationships worked was very interesting and to watch his relationships with all the characters develop was beautiful.
The character Hassan was also very interesting. He isn't your typical sidekick. Hassan is an overweight man who enjoys Judge Judy and isn't afraid to put Colin in his place which I enjoyed a lot. Hassan was very funny and quite relatable.
Lindsey however was my favorite character. Lindsey went through a lot of changes through the book, from being cheated on to learning her family is struggling with money when they are knowingly "rich". Lindsey cared about Colin the entire book which then developed to her being Colin's girlfriend, after TOC cheated on Lindsey with Hassan's girlfriend. Seeing her go through the changes that a lot of people have to go through everyday made Lindsey much more relatable then most of the other characters because people understand where she is coming from.
The road trip concept of the book was interesting and I wish more of the book was about the trip. I liked how the book started with them heading out on the highway and ended with them driving on the highway, this time with Lindsey.
Gutshot is a place I would love to visit, even if jerks like TOC live there.
In Katherines, Colin and Hassan were assigned the job of interviewing members of the town so that the history of the town could be known to generations on end. For $500 a week and a free place to stay, it wasn't a bad job. I was highly entertained by the history aspects of the book. Learning about how the town became to be and how the people of the town seen it was a beautiful thing to read because the storytellers were very passionate about it.
One of my favorite scenes was the scene when they went hog hunting, and when the hog came after Colin and Hassan, Colin avoided shooting the hog by shooting a hornet's nest. Hassan got the better end of the stick and only ended up with 3 stings while Colin had 8. Watching them run around screaming at the hornets and each other, was hilarious!
As for how the story continued on in the future, I have no idea what would have happened to the characters. I would hope that Colin stayed with Lindsey Lee Wells, Hassan stuck with his college plans and then succeeded to get a profession. Hopefully Colin gained some more confidence and also went off to college, taking Lindsey with him. I don't think there should be a sequel to Katherines, the story ended up on the perfect note, and for the 3rd time, John Green has not failed to impress.
