College here is 16-18 and its compulsory to stay in education now unless youre doing an apprenticeship!! Its sometimes called sixth form too. University is like 18+ and similar to American colleges as far as im aware but like none of my yankie friends have been so i cant rlly confirm owo;;

Wait so let me recap and see if I got it right:UK organized classes by how many years there are. 1-12? Being the main education everyone gets. 16-18 is college. And anything above 18 is University. And there's no name in place for each year? (Think US Freshmen to your year nine?)Is there a difference between college and University over there? Or is it like the US where the terms are interchangeable?Cause at least in the northwest US, you can get a basic jack-of-all-trades kind of degree (Associates or Basic degree) from any place of higher education while most "Unis/College" have bachelor's/masters/doctorates But still have the Associates/basic available, but not all "colleges" will have a Bach/Master/Doc degree. All of this being optional paths and not necessary right after HS. I'm a western cowgirl in college so I know some things for US education, more curious about other countries.And sixth form? Is that your final form😂😆😎

Hiya! Could you compare Pembroke and Jesus please? I'm very indecisive and am panicking a bit cos the deadline is Sunday 😬😬Thanks!

Hey! So they’ve got pretty different vibes. Jesus is really social - people go out clubbing very often, and it’s got quite a big drinking/going out culture. It’s also sporty, and very convenient if you’re into sports because sports grounds are on college. Pembroke, on the other hand, is more ambiverted -- people are social, but tend to mix going out with staying in. They tend to be quite involved with uni societies, but the college does have a more academic vibe to it. 

Most of Jesus accommodation is either onsite or very close by (although it doesn’t feel cramped because the college itself is massive), whereas Pembroke accommodation is slightly more spread out. Jesus is also better if you’re keen on cooking - Pembroke kitchens aren’t great, though hall food is amazing and they’re really good with allergies.

hiya, so i'm having trouble deciding which college to apply to, and i've been thinking either queens or clare - i was wondering if you could do a comparison? also, which would you say was closer to the natsci buildings?? thank you, and good luck as the new admin!! <3

Queens’ I would say is closer to the Downing and New Museums sites (which is where almost all BioNatSci lectures are) and also closer to Chemistry, though, to be honest, there’s not much in it. However, at Queens’ you do get to live on site the whole time, whereas I don’t think you do at Clare, so that would add distance from the lecture sites. 

Queens’ and Clare are both quite social colleges on the larger side, with a mix of staying in and going out. They both seem to have good accommodation and kitchen availability as well. Neither have crazy academic pressure in exam term too. 

I can’t think of many key differences between them, really. Queens’ is more modern than the Clare main site, and has all accommodation on site. Clare is a tier 1 college, while Queens’ is tier 2, so if you’re really torn and would rather try to avoid being pooled, I would go for Queens’. If you look through the tags for each college you’ll see quite a few specific comments about each, so that might tip your mind one way or the other.

Queens is a bigger college than Pembroke both in terms of physical size and student population, and socially Pembroke is associated with more of an introverted, academic vibe. There is a variety of architecture at Queens, ranging from the very very old to the quite modern, whereas Pembroke has more of a cohesive traditional/pretty style. I think there are more international students at Queens? Pembroke is relatively central but not in the thick of it tourists-wise, and couldn’t be better placed for the Downing site unless it was, y'know, Downing. Queens is on the backs, with its famous mathematical bridge a big tourist draw. Very good spot for reaching the Sidgwick site.

Please would it be possible for you to give a short summary of Kings and Clare's atmospheres? Sorry if that's too vague

Clare: quite social - they have amazing ents in their bar, which is in the college crypt, very friendly and open, doesn’t feel claustrophobic at all because the college grounds are massive and extend over either side of the river, fairly sporty.

Kings: alternative (they have fancy dress formals, and don’t have a may ball, but have the Kings Affair instead, which is like a super edgy music festival thing), left-wing, quite insular (they go out on different nights than the rest of the uni), seems pretty chill about academics

Stuck between Emma & Magdalene rn (for HSPS if that matters) - could you do a brief comparison of them in terms of maybe accommodation, facilities, vibe, etc? Am quite studious (but would not like somewhere with a v competitive atmosphere), friendly and mid-sized college would be nice

So the Emma DoS is in Politics, while Magdalene has two DoS’s: one for SocAnth and one for Sociology. Accommodation, they’re both of similar qualities, but Magdalene is much more spread out, especially in first year, while Emma tends to be on or near the site. Emma has a more academic vibe, so there’s more pressure in exam term than in Magdalene, which I see as very ambiverted. I feel like Emma’s got a work hard play hard vibe (except in exam term), but both are friendly and medium sized!
