Southern Wayne High School Senior Receives Scholarship from Local Nonprofit Organization started by Southern Wayne High alumni awards inaugural college scholarship
Dudley, N.C. (May 30, 2017) - Southern Wayne High School graduating senior, Elizabeth Lopez, was named recipient of the inaugural College Knowledge Dreamers and Doers scholarship. She was awarded $1500 to use towards the purchase of books, supplies and other materials for her enrollment in the University of Mount Olive this fall.
Founded in July 2016, College Knowledge is an organization that provides programming and resources to students in rural North Carolina, and their families, interested in learning more about the college admissions process, financial aid, and more. It was established by three Southern Wayne High School alumnae- Rachell Carroll, Faith Leach, and Angel Flow Williams.
The Dreamers and Doers scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school senior who balances school, community and civic involvement, all while demonstrating grit and perseverance. They must be accepted into and plan to attend an accredited undergraduate program the following fall semester.
“It feels amazing to know the scholarship funds will provide a bit of relief to Lopez’s family,” said Flow Williams. “College is expensive, and the numerous small things you need along the way can add up quickly. I know firsthand how any extra resources can be helpful.”
Students from underrepresented populations with a minimum GPA of 3.0, were encouraged to apply for the scholarship by submitting a written essay describing their community and civic involvement, any obstacles faced and overcome in the college enrollment process. Applicants also disclosed how the funds would be used.
Lopez, is an honors graduate, and plans to attend the University of Mount Olive in the fall.
“What stood out most about Elizabeth Lopez is her drive to succeed for her herself and her family,” said Carroll. “No matter the obstacles faced, she remained optimistic and resourceful, finding other avenues to help her family with the costs of her attending college. She is well deserving of our scholarship.”
Last summer, College Knowledge developed a half-day program to support Wayne County youth and their parents, as they prepare for college. The organization plans to host future programming throughout the year and will award a Dreamers and Doers scholarship annually.
“College often seemed out of reach to me, but by persevering through challenges, I successfully made it to North Carolina State University and became a first-generation college graduate,” said Leach. “Higher education changed my life and the trajectory of my family. I co-founded College Knowledge to encourage young people from rural NC to go to college and follow their dreams no matter the obstacles in their way.“
