I got rejected by my dream school and I’m so broken. I don’t have a plan b. This was the only place I wanted to go. What am I supposed to do now ?
Senior Year
Seeing as I'm about graduate high school in the next few weeks, I've been reflecting a lot on the past school, as well as my whole high school experience. I've had some good memories at my school, but I'm glad that I'm starting a new chapter in my life. There are new opportunities waiting for me out there that just can't be obtained from high school.
Senior year has been pretty ... decent. It was good with spirit week, senior trip, and senior breakfast, but the last two months have been emotionally exhausting. It was just nothing but disappointments and a blow to what's left of my self esteem.
They say disappointments make you stronger. If that's true, then I should have the strength of ten men! I'm pretty much the queen of failures at this point!
Out of the ten schools that I applied to for undergraduate admissions, I got accepted into 3, rejected from 6, and the other one never got back to me (long story). All six of those rejections were back to back. The first two I was able to swallow. The last two left me bitter and upset. I understand these schools were hard to get into, but the rejections still hurt, especially considering that I put so much time into these applications only to get a no.
On top of that , I also got rejected from every merit scholarship I applied to. Scholarships are even harder to get, but damn not one scholarship? At this point, they sound like my college rejections! They all say "this year was the most competitive . . . we regret to inform . . . we're sorry . . .". They all worded differently but they all say the same thing: you weren't good enough.
On top of that, I also had to deal with the constant facebook posts of people getting into numerous competitive colleges. Some of them were the very ones I applied to. Of course I said congratulations. I was genuinely happy for them, but it sucks that I can't take part in their joy.
I eventually committed to a college, but even that came with more disappointments. Out of the three schools that I got into, the one I really wanted to go to was a private research university that wasn't too far from my family. It was practically perfect and had everything I wanted, but when I got the financial aid package, it went downhill. I'm a low income student and this school was asking me to pay half of my family's income per year. This was impossible to pay, especially since I have younger siblings that need to go to college too. As much as I didn't want to, I had to give up my dreams of attending this school.
In the end, I committed to my safety school. It's a nice research public university that's four hours away from my family. It's a nice school, and I'll try to make the best of it. I just never would've thought that this school would've been one of my only options.
It's one thing to be rejected, but it's another for it to happen six times in a row, and to be rejected from every scholarship, and to give up a school you really wanted because of finances all while watching everyone else celebrating their numerous college acceptances.
I wasn't given the best hand in life. My family isn't rich, I 'm not Einstein, and I didn't find the cure to cancer. I'm aware of this so I make it up by working hard; I stayed up some nights studying for my AP classes, I always try to answer questions in class, and I take a one hour commute to my school every morning. And for what? Because I'm a first generation student that wants to learn, but in the end, it feels like it doesn't matter. I put in time into my application, spent winter break writing my essays, and took the SAT three times. Even when I poured my heart into these applications, it just seems like my hard work just went unnoticed. What was the point if all that work wasn't good enough? They say not to take rejection personally but it's contradicting since I put all my heart into those essays. . . yes, I'm bitter. Academics is one of the few things I actually take pride in, but even I don't have that now.
Everyone says you'll get over it eventually. but two months later, I still have a lump in my throat when I talk about it. One day I'll look back on this and realize that I don't need a school to tell me how much my dreams and ambitions are worth.
I feel like people who are willing to put in the grind aren't getting what they deserve. It's not like students who study all day and dedicate their lives to school aren't people. If I were an admissions officer, I'd be like "Yo c'mon let's think about this for a sec, just WHY would a student choose to stuff their face in a book all day? One: they could have a serious reason to pretty much give up their lives. And if that reason is strong enough to the point where they eat and breathe school , pretty sure they're be willing to give up their lives for other things as well um. Two: they could just plain be introvert and that's who they are and that doesn't mean they're not capable of excellence can we talk about Thoreau for a sec. Also yo what the heck aren't we supposed to teach our students how to be well rounded I'm a 'lil confused here."
So I've been feeling sorry for myself a lot lately after I got rejected from this university. I hadn't applied anywhere else because I was pretty confident I'd get accepted by this one and now I'm hunting for a place to apply in. Many of my friends and classmates have already started university two months ago and some of them are already writing their exams now. My sister came home today telling me that her IP teacher who taught me approached her to ask about me and when she found out I didn't make it she was pretty shocked and tsk tsked and walked away. I laughed when I heard this story but I actually felt more sorry for myself. What am I doing? Why am I like this? Why can't I figure anything out for Allah's sake? Why is everything so blurry and not making any sense? I can't find any answers despite prayers and it makes me feel pathetic. Like I did something wrong to deserve being left in the dark. I talked to Him, I cried to Him but I'm still here clueless. I blame myself sometimes. And other times I think like a reasonable person and tell myself it's what Allah has planned for me. He has something better in store for me. But then other thoughts start clouding my brain densely. How long will I wait? What if it's a long wait? All these what ifs are like a great darkness, persuasive and nasty, trying to engulf me along with the tiny bit of patience I have. I'm like a little lost lamb in the woods... Silhouette xx
Feeling lost
I got a college rejection letter yesterday. Apparently their enrolment capacity is zero so I didn’t get accepted, neither did my friends. I’m clueless as to where I should go. Clueless as to what I should do. I see no direction. Everything is so dark, I wish had a candle to light. Maybe it would make me find my path easily…
