Y/N had given up a long time ago on someone coming to save them.
Damien, the one person they had banked on never betraying them, had well, betrayed them.
Left them to rot away in a mirror that served as a cruel prison. They could see what was happening, but never experience it themselves.
For years, the mirror that held their soul was passed around, sold, stolen, passed from family member to family member, until one day, a very strange man purchased the mirror.
As the late DA got their bearings, taking in their new home, the man opened the door to his room and if they had a heart it would have stopped beating. It couldn’t be.
But it was. It was the eyes that gave him away.
Colonel William J Barnum.
They had found his real name out when they had stumbled across the Detective’s evidence room. But it truly was him. He was here.
Y/N watched quietly as he sat down in front of the shattered glass. He truly had changed. Gone was the bushy moustache, it had been replaced with a curly, pink one.
He had got rid of the glasses too.
But his eyes hadn’t changed a bit.
They sparkled with so much emotion. Joy, sadness and… tears?
Why did he look like he was about to burst into tears?
In fact, on closer inspection, Y/N noted just how quickly the joy in his eyes vanished, like it was a mask, and this room was the only place where he felt like he could take it off.
And how it hurt them to see him cry.
It was one of the most gut-wrenching feelings in the world.
Will, who had been so kind to them, ignoring just how afraid they were when he asked to talk to them alone when they were investigating Mark’s bedroom, was alone and hurt.
And in that spilt second, the DA knew what they had to do.
They tapped on the glass, hoping it was enough to get his attention.
The sobs paused for a second after Will heard the tapping, but quickly resumed.
At least he could hear them.
“Colonel?” they called out, pressing their hand against the glass.
Hearing their call, Will sat bolt upright and started looking around the room.
He couldn’t remember why, but something about that name, and the voice, was so hauntingly familiar.
When Wilford saw the hand on the glass, and the figure it belonged to, he almost fell off his chair in shock. There was a person in his mirror. An actual person that was not his reflection. And they were reaching out for him.
Cautiously, in case this was some trap that Dark had laid to catch him when he was vulnerable, Will reached out and placed his hand over the stranger’s.
When he did they started smiling. And crying at the same time.
And for some crazy reason, well crazy by his standards, Will could feel his heart breaking seeing them like this.
“Can you hear me?” he slurred softly.
“Yes.” Their voice was so warm and familiar, if only he could place where he had heard it before. Memories get jumbled up after so many years.
“Who are you?”
Hearing that question caused the smile to wipe away from Y/N’s face. The tears kept falling but they had changed from tears of joy to tears of sadness.
“You don’t remember me?”
Now Will could feel tears building up, and he didn’t know why, something was telling him to try and remember this person.
“Do I know you friend?”
“Colonel it’s me!” the started banging on the glass, desperately trying to escape and cling onto the only person they could trust now.
They looked back at him. Wiping away their tears, they took a deep breath before calmly being to recount how they met.
“We met at that poker night, it was outside on the porch. You introduced yourself before letting me go through the doors, I’m Damien’s friend!”
At the mention of Damien’s name, Will closed his eyes and looked away from them with a pained expression, he could hear ringing in his head.
“Nothing?? OK we got smashed off our heads drinking, Damien did a keg stand somehow, I got knocked out by the Detective!” there was still no response.
“The next morning, I stumbled across Mark’s after you-” they paused before taking another deep breath “after someone murdered him” they flinched saying that word
“Celine! She told us to say that he was killed! Will, please…”
Will was now on his knees, he could hear a shot gun going off and a scream.
“Colonel please… it was an accident remember?”
It was almost as if a switch had been turned on in his head, he could remember everything about them. Who they were, how he knew and… what he had done to them.
Slowly, Will rose to his feet and sat on the dressing table that was in front of the broken mirror that housed his friend. Their eyes were closed, but opened the moment that Will spoke.
“Y/N?”
A gasp escaped their lips as the pressed both their hands against the glass, and when Will pressed his hands against the mirror, a rush of warmth made it into the cold emptiness of the mirror.
“Y/N is it really you? I can’t believe it! I was so worried when I couldn’t find you again!” they were both crying at this point. A mix between joy and pain.
“Oh Will… I never thought I’d see you again…”
“What are you doing in there silly? I want to hug you and can’t because of the glass.”
The DA pulled away from the glass, immediately missing the warmth that Will had provided. They knew the truth would hurt him, but they couldn’t lie.
“Damien and Celine threw me in here Will, then they walked away with my body”
Will’s eyes widened, wishing that he could say that they were lying, but deep down he knew that there was a reason Dark looked like Damien, and why he had to crack his neck every-so-often, and why he occasionally got stomach pains in the exact same area that the bullet had entered Y/N.
“I know you don’t believe me Will-”
“I do believe you” his voice sounded almost like it had all those years again.
“You do?”
Will nodded, running a hand through his messy hair.
“And I promise I’ll get you out”
Y/N had no reason to believe him, everyone they had trusted in the past had betrayed them after all, even Will to some extent. But they did believe him.
Celine herself had said it.
He’s a good man.

Listen OK, I will fill up this ship alone if I have to. It’s cute and has plenty of opportunities for fluff and angst.
