DOLLY PARTON - JOLENE
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. I'm telling you, it's you and not your man.
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. What can I say, don't misunderstand.
Your beauty is beyond compare with full figure and golden hair. With wicked wit and a smile that charmed me. Your singing starts a fire in me, your laughter makes me weak in the knees. You're the one I want, not him, Dolly.
I cannot eat, I cannot sleep, there's nothing I can do to keep from crying when he calls for you, Dolly. And I can easily understand, how you could never leave your man. But you don't know how I yearn for you, Dolly.
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. I'm telling you, it's you and not your man.
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. What can I say, don't misunderstand.
I don't want to be just friends, I'm new to love and through with men. You're the only one for me, Dolly. I had to have this talk with you my happiness depends on you, take my hand and dance with me, Dolly.
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. I'm telling you, it's you and not your man.
Dolly, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. What can I say, don't misunderstand.
Dolly, Dolly.
My interpretation of Jolene is that the singer is addressing some variety of fairyfolk. Mayhaps a witch or spirit- or, maybe, simply an older woman with knowledge of poisons, who sees the abuse the singer has experienced at the hand of her husband, and desires to free her of it. But the singer, a woman, is dependent; Her partner provides for her and her children.
Notably, she doesn't say she *does* love him, she says she could never love again- If she were free of her husband, she would end up a single, widowed mother. She isn't talking about how she loves him NOW, she's talking about how in the system of patriarchy she is only ever allowed to love once, regardless of whether she still feels it. Love, in this context, is reliance.
+Her "happiness" that depends on Jolene is her children, who need their father alive to be fed and housed.
She WANTS Jolene to take him. She knows Jolene CAN take him. But what he means is stability. What he means is food and shelter for her kids.
"don't take him just because you can" is saying hey, I know he fucking sucks and deserves a healthy dose of monkshood in his coffee, but I can't feed myself on a woman's wages; Don't do this on a whim, do it with a plan that involves me coming out of this with resources to take care of my children. Wait.
Also, lesbians. Of course.
