A Finnish Guard at the Front Line with a Submachine Gun, Metsäpirtti, 17 January 1942
In December 1941, the front lines stabilized, and the war became a positional conflict in Metsäpirtti as well. Guard duty and patrolling continued relentlessly day and night in the cold, snowy forest, testing the men constantly. In some sectors, fierce clashes still took place. A single mistake could jeopardize the front line, making constant vigilance essential.
•••••••• [ sa-kuva | 70262 | M.Persson ]

Sister of Domingo Balinton, Sugar Pie grew up in San Francisco, California. Among her childhood friends was a girl named Jamesetta Hawkins, who would later become famous as Etta James. In the 1950s and 1960s, she toured with both Johnny Otis and James Brown, collaborated with Etta James, married Alvin Parham, (a.k.a. Pee Wee Kingsley), and changed her name to Peylia Parham. After their divorce from Parham, she moved to Chicago, where she kept on recording successfully and writing songs for other artists, often along with Shena DeMell. In 1960, DeSanto rose to national prominence when her single “I Want to Know”, reached number four on Billboard’s Hot R&B chart. She recorded the song with her husband, Pee Wee Kingsley. Soon thereafter their marriage ended. DeSanto moved to Chicago and signed with Chess Records in 1962 as a recording artist and writer. Among her recordings for Chess were “Slip-in Mules”, “Use What You Got”, “Soulful Dress” (her biggest hit for Chess), and “I Don’t Wanna Fuss”. She was given a Bay Area Music Award in 1999 for Best Female Blues Singer. In September 2008, she was given a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. She received a lifetime achievement award from the Goldie Awards in November 2009. https://linktr.ee/blues.in.colour
