Only two colours! / Part of my Colour Journal / I made this page last night and I can say that I feel a bit "rusty" since I was not able to draw much in almost 3 weeks because of my hand injury. I used Neva Pallet "White Nights" for the colours!

Oui c`est moi!
I do have big headphones and I do love to listen to music ... A LOT!
This is part of my Art Journal!
77/100 I've been thinking about color and it's role in the series that's emerging...In my research of botanical illustration I've learned that there have been times when accurate color has been the intention. I've been thinking about contemporary art clients and their need to have a pop of color to (for example) match the couch...and I've also been thinking about truth in general and it's place in society. So...this lead me to have fun with color. Also, I listened to @clairepicarddesign 's Skillshare class on keeping color/colour journals and I was inspired to start my own. I'm obsessed! #100daysofbugsbotanicals #mats100days #100daysproject #color #colour #colorjournal #colourjournal #eucalyptus #beetle #turquoise
Colour Journal #10: The Colourful Dress
Due Date: Friday, November 8th, 2013
Source: http://www.tumblr.com/
Critique:
This illustration found on tumblr.com is of a back view of a woman in a very colourful dress. She seems to be looking at something in the distance, just right of the direction to which the viewer is look at. Her arms are in front of her, and her elbows are bent as though she is clapping.
The first thing that draws the viewer’s eye into the image is the distinctively colourful dress. It is the main object in which the artist wanted the viewer’s eye to be led to. It is the only thing in the composition that is in colour, other than the woman’s shoes, which are brown with a star pattern drawn all over them. This adds to the image, balancing out the very bright dress with the rest of the woman’s body. Furthermore, the background seems to have a very light tint of grey allowing for the blank silhouette of the woman to be more pronounced.
I was really drawn to this image because of the use of multiple colours on the dress, and the woman’s direction to which she is facing in. I found that it was a very nice touch of the artist to illustrate her backside instead of her front because naturally, people tend to be drawn to another humans face before examining the rest of an image. I think this may be because we can relate to the figures in the composition if we know what the face looks like. The artist hides her face so that the viewers have no idea what the woman looks like, creating a sense of mystery and imagination. It is these subtle details that allow for an image to linger in a viewers mind. It creates conversation and thoughtful thinking.
The light outlining of the woman’s figure also has a big impact on the overall image itself. With the use of the overly colourful dress, the artist used a simple black outline to indicate the form of her head, the form under her dress, and her legs that lead down into her boots. Though the artist doesn’t use shadows to indicate the roundness of her body, the placement of the colours on her dress indicate the form of her back and waist, flowing down over her legs.
I found this image to be very visually pleasing and very crisp with the artist’s line work. I thought it was a wonderful piece all together.
Colour Journal #9: Unicorn Sprinkles
Due Date: Friday, November 1st, 2013
Source: http://www.tumblr.com/
Critique:
This animated image found on tumblr.com depicts a unicorn shaving his armpits, and a doughnut being sprinkled on by these shavings. The unicorn seems unaware of his actions, while the doughnut seems quite upset by the unicorn’s ignorance to the fact that his unwanted hair is getting in him.
I was looking up pictures of doughnuts with my friend when I came across this photo. I thought this image was cute, and found myself smiling to myself about it. Not too sure why, but I thought about how much I love sprinkles and how it could make sense if these magical shavings come from unicorn hair. It’s just a fantasy of mine knowing that unicorns exist.
The whole composition of this image is quite simple. There is a yellow background surrounding the two main figures: the unicorn and the doughnut. This layout allows for the viewers eye to focus mainly on the two central figures, while the use of brightly saturated colours, surrounded by a black outline, allows for an image full of energy. This energy comes off as playful, childish, and just plain silly. Although, due to the content and story portrayed in the composition, this use of child-like colours is very appropriate. It allows for the viewers mind to run wild with imagination.
The expressions of the figures also tell me of a deeper story about what the figures mean to the viewers. Unicorns are seen as innocent creatures, full of life and love. In this image, the unicorn seems quite happy, minding his own business. On the other hand, the doughnut seems angry from the unicorn’s actions. This negative energy radiated from the doughnut could signify a doughnuts negative connotation to those who cannot resist its delectable taste. A doughnut may look good to eat, especially with sprinkles, but it isn’t very healthy for your body.
Though, I may just be over analyzing the artist’s intentions for this image. Moreover, this is a very cute image. It makes me want to eat a doughnut!
