Pantone Colour of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet
“Tha Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” - Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute
Replacing 2017′s Greenery shade, Pantone has revealed the colour of 2018 to be Ultra Violet. According to Pantone, this ‘dramatically provocative’ shade of purple, chosen as this year's colour of the year, ‘communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.
You may think choosing the official shade of 2018 is just a futile, random decision. However, deciding the colour of the year is not something taken lightly by the Pantone Colour Institute. Each year they conduct in-depth research across a wide spectrum, taking into consideration all aspects of today’s society including design, fashion, film, technology and even sport. The company have stated that “Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”
Brands and designers from around the world are becoming more fascinated with colour and it’s ability to empower, influence and inspire. The dominance of this purple hue which stands for Defiance, hope and limitlessness seems more fitting than ever in today’s society. We’ve already seen the colour popping up in various upcoming trends, collections and street styles as seen above. It’s time to ditch 2017′s green and embrace the purple.
