Karen loves the 80′s...

...and has an especially fond place in her heart for Journey and Billy Idol, and that guy who did that one song that everybody thinks is Billy Idol but is not Billy Idol...

...he’s a Canadian; she will point out that to you every time you talk about wearing sunglasses at night.

She likes to mix spicy with sweet -- especially with chocolate.  Her fudge always has cinnamon in it (and usually has chili peppers), and she makes hot chocolate with cinnamon and paprika.

She grew up going hunting with her father.  She shot her first deer at twelve.

Karen learned to get into places she’s not supposed to be because of the guy who taught her to drive -- he thought it would be funny to teach the preacher’s kid how to steal. 

Neither Karen nor her criminal mentor ever expected her to make real use of her skills.

She brews (and has always brewed) coffee strong enough to peel paint off the walls.

"Stay with me tonight." (Uh oh.. what did i do!)

It’s not like she never spends any time in his safe houses – when she knows where they are, she drops in, very occasionally.  One of the advantages of mostly being a crime reporter, with sources on the sketchier side, is that almost nobody is surprised by anywhere she happens to be.  But she doesn’t visit often; half the time, she doesn’t even know where to find him.

Safer that way.

But this is one of those rarer nights, where not only has Frank allowed himself to be found, but she’s been welcomed into the safe house.  She’s felt a little like a ghost all night, drifting around between the guns and the grenades, drinking /his/ coffee for a change, and hunting through bits and pieces of information, talking over the latest targets.

They don’t watch the clock.  And somehow it’s three in the morning, and Frank is watching her over a cup of coffee.  His eyes look as exhausted as hers.  She moves closer to him.  Something in his expression, how worn it looks, how lost he manages to look, tells her that he needs a steadying hand.

She rests her hand on his arm, then her head on his shoulder.

He stiffens for a moment, and then relaxes into it.  Eventually, one of his hands comes to rest on her back.

They’re not looking at each other.  They say too much with just their faces, and sometimes it hurts to see.

“Stay with me tonight,” he says, his voice hoarse and rasping, raw.

Not a usual offer.  But she clings a little closer, holds him a little tighter, and says, softly, “Okay.  I’m – I’ll stay.”

"You can do anything you want to me, I don't care!" [ frank pls ]

She considers the knife in her hand.  Considers his soft, soft eyes and the soft skin of his throat and the raw honesty in his voice.  She almost asks if he really means ‘anything.’

But Frank doesn’t say things he doesn’t mean.

If her voice as she gives him his orders is cold, they both know it’s what he wants to hear, and the orders are ones he’ll gladly follow.

Public Service Announcement

I will be hosting a rabb.it group for The Punisher tonight and tomorrow.  It’ll start at 11 PM MST/1AM EST, and literally run until we have all passed out and rabb.it kicks the group, or until I finish Punisher. Whichever happens first.

Karen laughs, and tips the bottle of whiskey over her coffee mug.  She’d already been planning on having her coffee Irish, but she pours in a more generous tot than she’d intended.  It’s going to be one of those nights, apparently.  She looks back up at him, and says, “Words to live by, I guess.”
