Genuine theory:
Dom and Col were getting too close during quarantine and maybe too obvious. They were spending lots of time together and writing way more music that they've been able to put out to date (this has been stated by both of them) Maybe they were getting too... Open and both their managements (but especially Colson's) didn't like where it was headed. How can a man constantly rapping about his female conquests suddenly be with a boy in a black dress?
They decided to do what most Hollywood (possible) gays have to and hired someone else in the industry to play a girlfriend for so much time. It was set up to revive her career because she obviously needed it and to further his. Which it did although maybe not in the best ways.
In the music video they showed they were dating in, Col even has what seems to be a reference to one of Dom's music videos. In Parents Dom is electrocuted in the bath and the same happens in Bloody Valentine. As we all know Parents is a song that references sleeping with your best friend. I'm also not sure why a man would be surprised calling someone "girlfriend" in their head. It doesn't sound exactly like a song about an easily acceptable relationship, it sounds like a love you're not allowed to have. "I can not hide these feelings/ I can't hide how I feel about you inside".
Dom was also given a contract relationship but considering neither are yet on the same level of fame they're not as talked about in the media. But I'm sure JJS's career has been helped since being with Dom, her clothing line certainly has.
In their first video together- Strawberry Lipstick- the song itself has a line, "This is a song about a person I love" and then goes on to say, "they're gonna lock me in the closet but I'm coming out". Weird lines to be about a girl and well, they wouldn't be the first men having to change "he" to "she".
They both started relationships somewhat close to the same time, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens with JJS now...
Edit: Perhaps it even started with SR for Col but because of her telling the world she wouldn't sleep with him yet that didn't exactly cover up who he could be sleeping with.
