#3664 - Theridion zantholabio

A combfooted spider found across much of New Zealand.

It was first described by Swiss-born naturalist Arthur Torrane Urquhart 1886, and named for the yellow lips, presumably.

Queenstown, NZ. I saw this one on the last trip, but didn't get an ID until recently. On THIS trip, we only stopped in Queenstown long enough to pick up an external harddrive for all the photos I was taking.

#1858 - Cryptachaea veruculata - Diamond Comb-footed Spider

Suspended over the trunk of a meat-ant infested eucalypt out at Jarrahdale Dam.  Native to Australia and New Zealand,  introduced to England and Belgium and a potential biocontrol of spider mites and leafroller caterpillars in New Zealand.

#1859 - Euryopis sp. - Ant-eating Spider

From the Greek for 'Having a broad face’. Comb-footed Spiders in the subfamily Hadrotarsinae.

Spiders that lurk on the trunks of trees, or among leaf litter, with an odd posture, waiting for ants and possibly other small insects to wander past, whereupon they’ll rush over to entangle them in silk. 

There’s 75 known species in the genus, found in most parts of the world, but they’re generally pretty similar in appearance.

#1860 - Theridion sp. - Tangle-web Spider

Photographed by me, in Banjup, Perth. 

A large genus with some 600 described species around the world. Notable examples include the Hawaiian happy face spider T. grallator, named for the symbol on its abdomen, and T. nigroannulatum, one of few spider species that lives in social groups, and dogpile prey.
