Small but important question: I'm on my way to conversion. My family and a few close friends know, but at what point is it appropriate to "go public?" Can I wear a Magen David necklace, or change my Facebook info, or talk about "our" tradition in conversations about religion? I feel a strong desire to be more openly and visibly Jewish, but I respect the process and the effort it takes to become Jewish. How much can I claim membership in a group I haven't yet formally joined?
Definitely a question for your rabbi. I’d say it’s 100% okay to talk about being someone in the conversion process as much as is safe/comfortable. But decisions like wearing a Magen David, what conversations to enter, and to what extent you can identify as Jewish are questions you need to talk to your rabbi about.
I can give you a general heads-up that you aren’t Jewish until fully completed conversion per your community’s practice. While your rabbi may well say wearing a Magen David is all good, your Facebook profile will likely have to wait (unless there’s a way to write “converting to Judaism” in it??).
Best of luck with your conversion!
