Option 1 is Shen Qingqiu is arranged to marry Luo Binghe, while Shen Yuan is arranged to marry Yue Qingyuan. However, their carriages crash together, and the two of them meet. However, Shen Qingqiu has met Luo Binghe multiple times and despises him. He knows Yue Qingyuan more (I’m thinking childhood friends to accidental betrayal) and knows that while he hates them both, he wants to mess with Yue Qingyuan more. Meanwhile, Shen Yuan has a little bit of a crush on Luo Binghe, having heard tales of his heroics and kindness. Therefore, they decide to switch places
Option 2 is Shen Yuan (an exasperated editor) boards the same cruise as Shen Qingqiu (a harsh book critic). Both of them are there to get some air, unaware that they are both reading things by the same author (Shang Qinghua), and they keep misplacing their notebooks, causing them to constantly switch notebooks in a comedy of errors
Option three is Shen Qingqiu is supposed to be on a first date with someone (mostly to prove that he can be a people person). At the same time, Shen Yuan is supposed to be on a blind date with one of his friend’s cousins. Unknowingly, both reservations are put under the last name Shen, and they end up swapping dates. (Not 100% sure on the ships for this one, but I’m personally picture Shen Qingqiu on a date with either Yue Qingyuan (his ex best friend) or Liu Qingge.)

Now, let’s get into the actual AU (this mostly focuses on backstories, who is who, and the context of the marriages)
Yue Qingyuan and Shen Qingqiu met at a gala when they were young and became close almost immediately. However, Yue Qingyuan pretended to be a lower lord’s son, not a prince. Shen Qingqiu found out about Yue Qingyuan’s prince status and due to a classic misunderstanding, Shen Qingqiu believes Yue Qingyuan only befriended him to get information on Shen Qingqiu’s family (who were accused of several awful things) and then just stuck around because of pity or for laughs. (Yue Qingyuan’s father did attempt to have him spy, but he told his father no, which led to his father spilling the beans and causing Shen Qingqiu to lose faith in Yue Qingyuan.)
There are only two major kingdoms in this au: the Qingyuan kingdom and the Bingghe Kingdom. There are several smaller territories or regions but these two kingdoms are the major ones.
Shen Yuan and Shen Qingqiu are both from noble families. Shen Qingqiu is an only child of a noble family who was accused of treason and forced to move to the Bingghe Kingdom due to it. The family was found innocent, but the bad reputation stuck around. Shen Yuan’s family is a family of lesser nobles, having only achieved their status within the past two generations, so the proposal was an extremely big surprise.
Why the families came together in the first place: for YQ’s family, it was mostly an apology. Very few people outside of the palace know it, but YQ’s father, while a very calculating man, did love his son, and after almost 17 years of his child hating his guts, he has fully realized that he fucked up. So, when he found out about a noble family with a child, who was the spitting image of his son‘s first love, but without any sort of bad reputation, he immediately started arranging for the marriage. YQ was told of the marriage, and thinks that it was away for his father to stop him from going SQQ, he’s very about the whole thing.
LB’s thing is a bit more complicated. The treason accusation was because SQ’s family was doing business with LB’s family, but it was to save S ex’s life. She didn’t die in childbirth in this AU, but that is only because of SQ‘s family, particularly SQ’s stepmother. The marriage thing has been set in place for a while, even though as SQ and LB have grown-up together, SQ has made his distaste for the arrangement abundantly clear. While LB used to have a ginormous crush, he is no longer obsessed with SQ. However, he still has to go through with the marriage
Shang Qinghua is the only one who knows about everything. He was a servant who originally worked for SQ’s family, but when he was 13, his family started working for SY‘s family. He is heavily against the switch, but realizes there’s no way he’s going to be able to talk anyone out of it. Unbeknownst to most people, he has been secretly learning magic on the side, and has almost mastered teleportation. SY knows, and he tells SQ. He becomes the official liason between the two of them, allowing them to send letters back-and-forth easily.
LQ is the captain of the guards for YQ. MBJ is also the captain of the guard, but for LB. MQF is a healer who works for YQ, and his father was the one who helped deliver the Shens.
(I know Shen is the last name, not first name, but I am debating whether or not to have both of their first names being Shen, that the families are easier distinguished, or to have them also not only be twins from their mothers, but also distantly related from their fathers’ sides.)
(Also, I know it’s weird that I shortened a lot of the names of their initials, but I got tired of writing their names out over and over again. Deal with it.)
