BLANK plays BLANK, no. 1. Another Christmas gift album, which I’d requested. I assumed this couldn’t miss. But like all these projects, some of it I enjoyed and some I just kinda had to wait out. I became a fan of the producer, @warrenzanes, reading his biography of Tom Petty (co-worker @kylenordsiek still uses Petty’s coffee recipe Zanes published in The New York Times after Tom died). Zanes plus the presence of Rosanne Cash (@mrslev) and Aimee Mann (@realaimeemann) made it a no-brainer. Now I realize purchasing these projects blind always turns out to have been better off as a brainer. Some of the artists captured that Tom Waits half-rough / half-romantic / droll / convincing-detailed / seedy thang and some people just sang pretty. Even when Waits writes pretty, it seems like the performance has to have a little, uh, scratch. Corrine Bailey Rae and Iris DeMent and Wild Reeds and Phoebe Bridgers did what I was expecting the whole album to do—there’s edginess. Rosanne and Aimee and Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer were all basically themselves and they’re all awesome, though maybe not as Waits-y as I hoped. Some of the others though, were just too sweet or pretty without any of that Waits tension. I know I’m supposed to love Patty Griffin but Ruby’s Arms was so straight it got wearying midway. One of my all-time favorite albums is John Hammond’s “Wicked Grin” which gets the Waits balance perfect: seedy but without the latterday Waits “challenging” rawness. Hammond had that danger-wink. A lot of these tracks, though, well, they swing too far the other way. The sweet way.
