The tension of the morning refused to ebb — didn't help that their mother had been oscillating between acting obscenely passive - aggressive and quietly sobbing in the bathroom . Meanwhile , their father had gone off to work before dawn even broke and Adeline had been clinging to him like a lost puppy since he managed to tear himself out of bed . Then Elliot's questions that he so badly didn't want to answer , because as the oldest , somehow he had to be the responsible one here . So when Danny arrived expecting their usual co-op gaming session , Theo raced to the door — his baby sister only barely lagging behind , clinging to his shirttail . As soon as the door opened , he stepped outside , closing the door behind him and his sister . " Hey — what if we just go out somewhere instead , yeah ? I need to get out of the house for a while . Mom's being — annoying . " Annoying perhaps wasn't the most apt description , but how was he supposed to explain the truth without saying everything ?
