A Comic about my Dissatisfaction
please put your long comics behind a cut ?? i like them but i end up seeing them 5 times lol
I unfortunately can’t and won’t put my long comics under a cut, for several reasons and yes I’ve thought about this very hard over the years of slowly figuring out how to best post comics on Tumblr.
1) Putting comics under a cut means that it will be in the text section on the post, not image. This means you will be redirected to view it on my blog instead of your dash. The formatting of my blog theme makes it so images will be squashed into lower resolution than usual and cause blurring since I format specifically for the dash. Spacing between images will also be wrong.
2) You will not be able to click on images to enlarge them for easier viewing, which is sometimes a necessary feature for comics with more details. In the text section, each image would have to be opened separately in a different tab, which is far too much effort and also hinders the smooth reading experience.
3) Tbh, most people are too lazy to click under the cut to read the rest of the comic and would rather skip it entirely. Which I understandably prefer people not do.
Then why don’t you at least rearrange the photoset so it’s not all just one long scroll?
4) Because my comics often contain plot twists, or Dramatic Scenes that i do not want people glimpsing prior to actually getting to it. On top of that, I usually format my comics to read vertically as you go down your dash, ideally not the tap and flip individual images.
I understand this creates a massive long post smack dab in the middle of your dash, and I know how this may inconvenience some people, so I always take the following precautions to try to make things easier:
1) I ALWAYS put “Hit the J Key to skip on your dash!” or some variation at the top of all of my long comics. This obviously doesn’t work on mobile, but on computer, hitting the J key is a shortcut that will skip the post entirely and move you to the post below it. No more scrolling, you don’t need to see my comic at all. It’s actually a pretty great way to scroll and I use it all the time, but I’m aware not everyone knows of it ^ ^;
2) I ALWAYS tag both #longpost and #long post so people who don’t like seeing longposts can blacklist and never see my crap.
I hope the above shows you WHY I format my comics the way I do, and I hope the methods of avoiding them will be helpful. Most of my future long comics will also be formatted this way, like Inferno, so I hope this makes skipping them easier ^ ^; Thanks.
