Saturday was the inaugural Comic Street event organised by @mamath and @beabravo! Sam and Bea stepped in after I was unable to continue with the event many months ago, and they did an INCREDIBLE JOB! The weather was amazing, the foot traffic barely had a pause and most of the visitors were members of the public! They had no idea what it all was and were amazed - we heard 'I had no idea people did all this!' a number of times. This in itself is a great mark of success - one of the most important things for indie comics here is public visibility and the venue was PERFECT for it! We even had the chance to encourage a few women to talk to Woolf Pack about trying out making zines! In terms of sales, I did amazingly well with everything packed into my space. I made more money in the 10-4 time than I did on either day at Gold Coast Supanova (though not more than Melbourne) which gives you an idea of how incredible it was! It's this kind of highly visible local event that I believe holds the future of independent comics. I still feel there's a place for the big events, especially in terms of visibility and representation, but events like this are crucial to local communities. And it was organised by just two people!
