Concerning the BZP Comics Contest
So, BIONONCLES ACTITON COMIC got second place.
Needless to say, no-one was pleased and it was hilariously pathetic to watch the loldramatic response unfold, but for once that's not why we're here today.
Basically, some of the BAAAAAAAAAAWing has decided that the Lunacy is directly involved in forcing it to win in a underhanded manner because we decided to promote BIONONCLES ACTITON COMIC. The leap of logic from "promoting something" to "forcing its win" is flawed and baseless under these particular circumstances, but more on that later.
First, Windrider has this to say on the matter:
Yes, I am aware that the entry was advertised off-site. We can't control what happens outside of BZPower; we can't stop someone from supporting an entry. And why would we? That's a akin to favoritism, and we, as contest hosts, need to remain neutral. No, it's not unfair; everyone is allowed to advertise his or her entry both on BZPower and off, but it can't even be proven that the author is affiliated with the site. None of this means the votes were rigged.
More or less right on the money, good sir, but we've got a little more to say on the matter.
The implication here is that the Lunacy was single-handedly responsible for its win. Was it? We honestly can't know for sure, but I'm betting on no. Face it: the Lunacy of LEGOman Values is not the giant and overwhelming ominous force of doom and destruction people seem to think we are (nor do we want to be!). We have a relatively tiny base of followers, and I highly doubt that every single one who follows us is a) an active or able member of BZPower, b) actually cares about the comics forum and its contests, and c) appreciates the stylistic suck arts enough to vote for it over legitimately good entries like Strawberry Ice Cream. We have no ability to force people to do something; we can and do only entertain and inform (depending on your definition of "inform" at least). It is the burden of the individual if they decide to act upon anything we say. so no our mind control chips are not ready yet
Oh yes, that's right. Remember, BAC was not the only one we plugged. We also put a positive word in for Strawberry Ice Cream, though admittedly we did so with less enthusiasm or focus. To be blunt, that was easily the best unironic entry in the contest, and we're glad it made third considering it was pretty far down when we first saw the poll.
Of course, then there are those who suggest that we forced it to win through even more underhanded means, like hacking. These people conveniently forget that we've spent most of the past few months expressing our extreme disapproval for the actions of Crack Jag and other past BZP hackers, that we ourselves have no hacking ability in the first place, and that hacking is not a simple matter of snapping your fingers and ALL DONE that poll option just got twenty more votes, as even the vain Crack Jag readily admitted. And let's face it, had we somehow hacked BZP to make it win, I'm pretty sure Black Six or someone would have noticed by now and corrected our damage.
Now I think about it, I wonder whether this furore would be happening if we had backed another entry, and if they're objecting solely because it's pretty much a joke entry (which it obviously is; despite being legitimate ruleways, it is most definitely a joke, that was the entire point). If we could actually be bothered, this would be interesting to test in future contests; there's something I find fascinating about the sociology of BZPower.
As a final note, one of the main objections to BAC's progress we saw going around during the polling period was that it was so bad that it winning would make the comics forum look bad. Note that basically everyone who has ever been on BZP and not been involved with the comics forum absolutely hates the comics forum already, and the results of a contest will do nothing to sway that long-held (based in fact but largely incorrect and exaggerated) view. The things you learn by visiting places on BZP that aren't the comics forum...
(also just for the record the winner was basically a verbatim repetition of a scene from Iron Man 2 so)
[addendum from another admin: even as defined as a joke entry here, it's not as they say it is; the entry was created to be hilariously bad. the implication that no effort went into it is completely absurd. others even implied that it takes effort to make something that bad; how the joke of it escaped them is beyond me, but the point is that the entry was a legitimate piece of work that clearly had some effort put into it.]
