ComiQuest takes place November 9-11, 2018

The Carolina Theatre and NC Comicon present ComiQuest, an annual film festival celebrating the best cinema pop-culture has to offer.

Individual tickets are $9.50.  These are not included in the Retro Season Pass.

Retro Film Series & NC Comicon Present: ComiQuest Film Series (Nov 9th-11th) George Lucas’ WILLOW 30th Anniversary (PG, 126 min, 1988) In conjunction with Lucasfilm, Retro Film Series and Ultimate Comics present this ultra-rare 30th Anniversary presentation of the beloved fantasy which journeys to the far corners of your imagination.  From legendary filmmakers George Lucas and Ron Howard comes a timeless fantasy tale in which heroes comes in all sizes... and adventure is the greatest magic of all.  When young Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) finds an abandoned baby girl, he learns she is destined to end the reign of the wicked Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh).  In order to protect the child, Willow must team up with a rogue swordsman (Val Kilmer) and overcome the forces of darkness in the ultimate battle of good versus evil! ComiQuest takes place November 11-13, 2016

The Carolina Theatre and NC Comicon present ComiQuest, an annual film festival celebrating the best cinema pop-culture has to offer.  This year, the creators of DC's YOUNG ANIMAL line of comic books have hand-picked an array of modern classics and old favorites for ComiQuest, selecting titles that have inspired their work on the books Doom Patrol, Mother Panic, Shade the Changing Girl, and Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye.  Like YOUNG ANIMAL, each film challenges the norm, pushing the boundaries of style, craft, and genre-making ComiQuest the Film Festival for Dangerous Humans.

Had an odd experience at the ComiQuest movies today, at the showing of Heavy Metal.  While waiting for the theatre to re-open (as they were cleaning it following the previous showing), and later while in the theatre waiting for the movie to start, I overheard at least three incidents of a guy telling a girl that was with him something to the effect of “OMG you’re going to love this movie, it’s going to change your life.”

(”change their life” = “allow them to realize they like girls”?)

And shortly before it started, a man stood up -- one of the volunteers for the NC Comicon, it tuns out -- and asked who here had never seen Heavy Metal.  About a third of the audience (of about 40-50) raised their hands.  Of the ones raising their hands, most seemed to be women in their late teens or 20s.

During the movie, I did notice a lot of laughs from the audience, mostly during the scenes of gratuitous nudity and sex.  So, for about a third of the film.

Also: I just realized that the demon-god-thing worshiped in the “Den” story -- the thing that sounded like “Oolootek” -- is Uhluhtc... which is ”Cthulhu” spelled backwards.
